Crystal clear 360 pics that everyone smiles at.
I've heard that the video quality could be sharper, compared to Samsung 360 Gear, but if it is still images you're looking for I can't see how you can go wrong with the Theta S. It works very intuitively, though the sharing options are a little confusing, at first. If you have a decently powerful smart phone you will have an easy time sharing to Facebook and to Twitter. The editing tool allows you to title overlay and tweak simple tones and make sharable crops. You also have a theta dot com share option which will give you a URL you can email to friends etc - if they have a 360 capable browser (note, Safari is NOT 360 capable) they can explore and they will smile. 360 pics are fun! There is a theta app for Gear VR goggles but I'm not sure how to transfer images to it so I can't comment on it. The 'fault' of lower quality video doesn't even drop it a star in my opinion. 360 video is expensive, we're in the early days right now - think VGA webcam for context ;-) so if you have commercial quality needs hopefully you have a commercially sized budget £10,000s and on up.. Realistically you'll be playing and experimenting. The Theta's bonus in that department is that it is the only live stream capable 360 cam so far and i'd be happy to loose a little crispness and focus on middle distance and moving items in video for that. Would you? If so, its a no brainer. If not, check yourself and ask how much video you'll shoot. This is a brilliant and entertaining still camera and if you find it at a good price - mine was £199 here on eBay - you be grinning from ear to ear to ear! Great little gadget
Still relatively new, the 360 degree images and video is great fun to use. The Ricoh Theta S makes it very easy, it's pretty much ready out the box and default settings will give you great quality. Get the app though and the camera becomes very adjustable with controls over the settings photographers will be used to. Excellent 360-degree camera, a clear upgrade from LG 360
I thought I was happy with my LG 360 but after having purchased the Theta S for comparison, the latter is a clear upgrade. No more fuzzy stitching artifacts, much better sharpness and clarity (even though nominally a lower megapixel count), better automatic white balance and no more need to separately switch on WIFI in the camera in order to remote control it from the phone.
