About this product

Product Information

The incredible autobiography of Yeonmi Park- a North Korean defector who escaped across the Gobi desert and is now a leading spokesperson for human rights at just 24 years old Yeonmi Park was not dreaming of freedom when she escaped from North Korea. She didn't even know what it meant to be free. All she knew was that she was running for her life, that if she and her family stayed behind they would die - from starvation, or disease, or even execution. This book is the story of Park's struggle to survive in the darkest, most repressive country on earth; her harrowing escape to South Korea through China's underworld of smugglers and human traffickers; and her emergence as a leading human rights activist - all before her 21st birthday.

  • Going back one hundred years

Yes from the very first page Yeonmi describes her childhood when a a little girl she had to harden herself walking to school walking by dead bodies and then she was taken to the capital for a month at 07:00 every morning the country is woken up to do communal cleaning. Everything is so clean in the capital's streets but on the train home she could see the changes further away closer to home. I hope so very soon that the authorities in this part of korea end and the dissolution crumbles I am in ore of Yeonmi Park, her sister and her mother, inspirational

  • Well written and worth a read.

So far in what I have read the young author tell of how things were in North Korea. It is one of those books where you could sit and read it till you had finished it but I don't have the time. Serving from the start of the Korean War I have found it all very interesting and to what we were out there for. Edgar Green (Ex Middlesex Regiment)

  • Inspiring, heart breaking and eye opening, all at the same time

Written in plain, simple English, this true story makes you to reflect on what you consider a challenge in your daily life. When you see what people need to struggle with in NK, you realize how many things you take for granted. Recommended!

  • a harrowing but interesting book

It is a very interesting read, while the description of North Korea & Yeonmi's life is harrowing, it is educational and compelling. Definitely worth a read.

  • Thought provoking autobiography of a North Korean girl

This is a very thought provoking book about life for an ordinary little girl and her family living in North Korea in the late 1990s/early 2000s. North Korea is a very secretive country which lied even to its own people.
