  • Heavy - as quality lenses are

Earlier in the year, I dithered over whether to buy this or a Sigma 70-200 and 2x teleconveter. I opted for the latter which was a mistake for though the Sigma is a lovely lens, it is autofocus only (I'd never experienced a lens with no manual option so hadn't even looked for that feature) and I found that whatever mode, autofocus couldn't cope with what I wanted to do at the higher zoom end. I kept the Sigma - like I said, it's lovely and IS brilliant for closer subjects that aren't whizzing about unpredictably and/or a background the autofocus knows what to focus on - and bought this for the higher end zoom work. So far I've used it twice and have been very pleased with the results, despite being on a learning curve for using such a weighty lens and the frustrations of such a narrow field of view i.e. "Where did it (the subject) go?" but when those are overcome, it delivers the quality expected of a Nikon lens

  • Excellent lens, very sharp images, VR system that actually works, but it`s a hefty brute.

Excellent product as you would expect from Nikon, focus is fast, the VR system is really good, and the lens produces top quality images. Only downside and it is a problem with almost all ultra zoom lenses, is it is heavy, like really heavy. 2.3 KG may not sound like too much, but after a few hours at an air display, or out on a photo shoot, you will notice the weight. Ok, that is only an issue if you are using it hand held, monopods I don`t rate them really, and shooting aircraft on a tripod just doesn`t work for me. Just remember to set it down gently, and often to rest your shoulder and arms.

  • Sharp, focus, VR excellent

This lens I recommend is very sharp, relatively fast focus, excellent VR. If someone wants to shoot without a tripod, it is necessary to start a fitness center. The weight of 2.3 kg plus camera is known after an hour of photography. It's such a small strengthening. I recommend.

  • Very pleased.

Some success with elusive wildlife already. Amazed that Nikon have produced a telephoto lens that doesn't require taking out a mortgage. Have always had Nikon DSLR cameras but could not afford a Nikon telephoto of this focal length.

  • Great value for money

Best used with some support like a monopole or tripod as it is heavy when hand held after 8 hours walking and taking motorsport and wildlife pictures. Can be a little slow at autofocus on occasions but pin sharp at 500mm. A great compromise if ( Like me) you can't afford a full set of prime lenses across this range. Great colour reproduction and no vignetting. Highly recommend this lens.

  • Great Tele zoom for birders!

Exceptional value in a Tele zoom with VR that really works! I can take sharp images at 1/125 at 500mm or if it´s in really dark conditions, down to 1/25 if i hand hold it extra tight. Rather light weight and a very useful zoom range. Good foot for camera stand included. Easy to manipulate focus with one finger to adjust the focus past twigs and other stuff that gets in the way of the bird etc. Works fine with TC-14E but mostly only with the center focus point but that works for me anyway! All in all: Very good value and super sharp! Photos taken in Bromma, Sweden at April 26 2017 with a Nikon D600.

  • Nikon 200-500mm f.5.6 zoom

This is a very well designed and versatile product from Nikon that has fast autofocus and a pin sharp image. I have used it with a D810A body in both FX and DX modes and also with a D7200 in DX and DX1.3x crop mode and all give excellent pin sharp results. It has been unfairly criticised for being heavy @ 2.3kg which is not unreasonable for such a large amount of glass. It has similarly been criticised for having a minimum aperture of f.5.6 and being of little use in poor light conditions which is quite frankly ridiculous. With the modern Nikon Exspeed 4 engine, it is simplicity itself to dial up 1600+ asa or even much higher without loss of image quality. I find the best results @ f.8 - f.11. In short, excellent image quality, engineering design and superb value for money. Highly recommended

  • Nikon wins

This is an excellent lens. I have not had time to use it much, as the weather has been awful with rain and then more rain. From the little time I have been able to use it I can say it takes nice sharp photo's and is easy to hand hold.

  • Excellent

So glad i bought this Len's only used it a few times but the images are sharp and you soon get used to the weight i use it hand held all the time and being at 5.6 all the time it works better in low light and fast focus im very impressed so far especially for birds in flight the images are amazing the picture below is one of my first images captured with this Len's

  • Bargain telezoom nice quality

It just great. Never thought I would own a 200mm-500mm full frame lens that I could handhold down the zoo, stabilisation is really impressive. Cant wait to do Flamingo portraits... Its got some weight but considering what it does not too heavy. F5.6 is all I need.
