My 1st "smart charger"
I have a car battery charger. An old transformer thing that can do upto 5 amps. It never delivered more than 2 into anything. With countless alarm gel cells, the lawnmower 45Ah flooded, motorbike sealed 12ah and the car AGM it was no use anymore. As an electronic engineer I have designed a good number of battery devices and vehicles and have ££££ of equipment that can charge batteries. This is no good however long term. Victron are a name I have used in the past for serious vehicle projects and never had an issue. It just works. Even after years of neglect it still works. The charger is waterproof, so can be used beside the vehicle. The user can set the charge values for any kind of lead battery. The device can act as a full current PSU for flashing ECU while the battery is connected. Bluetooth app connects to PC Software as well as phone apps. Measures charge Ah. For tracking battery health. 2 current levels makes even the 15 amp charger useful for small batteries (4 amp output mode) Battery recovery works from 0 volts. So if you do not have a bench PSU and know what to do.... it is the only option. Custom float voltage so you could fit and forget. The app at first appears limited. In reality it does everything it needs to, and well. The Graph mode is a waste of time as it is static and conveys almost no information. Realtime readout is excellent and simple v/I out. History gives the Ah input and total. Excellent for checking the state of a cycled battery. Custom profiles and advanced settings let you set exactly the conditions for the battery in use and there are a number of useful presets there too. Stays cool. Fit and forget. Can be tuned up for the application. Not just a charger but a PSU too. Historic readout excellent. Can be used without bluetooth. Only downside.. Perhaps the crock clips are a bit poor. However they function just fine. I expected the 15 amp guy to be too much for the small batteries I use but there are no problems as the output is stepped. Batteries also draw current at the supplied voltage. Not absorb supplied current, so you are better with the larger supply as regardless you can set voltage limits on the charger. Unless you are only charging small batteries and the expense is too much. That is: if the charger can only put out 16 volts and the battery has a set internal resistance.. you can only get out a proportional current. The maximum current possible is limited by the charger current output (high or low) but this can Always be restricted by the adjustable charge voltage. Is it worth it... the charger cost me £97 new. A 15 amp multi mode charger. For £0.08 of electricity I have recovered a £65 battery. A further £0.10 has confirmed the car battery is in good health (a £180+ part). I can monitor UPS batteries at £20 each and condition the bike battery. (£70). Don't be a plumb. Get the correct tool for the job. For PB batteries (12 volt in this case) this IS the tool. Note. I have made measured discharge devices and have accurate measuring equipment to help condition batteries. This is a charger and is therefore only 1 tool of a number needed, as well as knowledge of the subject. For capability and ease there is no rival here.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Excellent charger and easy to use bluetooth app
