About this product

Product Information

In evocative and lucid prose, James Rebanks takes us through a shepherd's year, offering a unique account of rural life and a fundamental connection with the land that most of us have lost. THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks' isn't. The first son of a shepherd, who was the first son of a shepherd himself, he and his family have lived and worked in and around the Lake District for generations. Their way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand, and has been for hundreds of years. A Viking would understand the work they do- sending the sheep to the fells in the summer and making the hay; the autumn fairs where the flocks are replenished; the gruelling toil of winter when the sheep must be kept alive, and the light-headedness that comes with spring, as the lambs are born and the sheep get ready to return to the fells.

Profound book - taught me so much

I adore this book. I ordered it wanting to understand more about being a shepherd because of what Jesus says about shepherds and sheep. It’s given me lots of insight about that, and much more. This book kind of gets into your soul - lots of wonderful content about place and life and death and vocation and values and community. And it also has some profound things to say about narratives, values, changing our minds and how we understand each other.

    A Lot about Sheep

This is a book I have to read for my Book Group, but I don't like non-fiction. As far as I am concerned it is like reading an awfully long newspaper article, and is therefore boring. Otherwise it arrived promptly with the book in good condition. Just not my cup of tea at all.

  • The truth of hill farming.

Spoke to me, as no other book has, about growing up on a farm in the hills. Beautiful, funny, sad and thought-provoking. A valuable book about farming, about farmers and the love they have for their stock

  • Very good.

I have visited the Lake District but never realised what goes on "behind the scenes" . Very interesting, a real eye-opener, a compelling read. I would thoroughly recommend this book to all.

  • The honest life of fell sheep farmers

James Rebant is just a very honest man, who values his local community more than money. It is about his life as a sheep farmer on the fells of the Lake District. Is a pleasure to read
