WINNER OF THE KIRKUS PRIZE 2015 & SHORTLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2015 Astonishing and unsettling ... A masterwork San Francisco Chronicle A book that demands to be read. Wall Street Journal A Little Life is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and the limits of human endurance. When four graduates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he'll not only be unable to overcome - but that will define his life forever. ACCLAIM FOR A LITTLE LIFE Transporting . . . A Little Life is not to be missed. Evening Standard The first must-read novel of the year Kirkus A singularly profound and moving work . . . It's not often that you read a book of this length and find yourself thinking I wish it was longer but Yanagihara takes you so deeply into the lives and minds of these characters that you struggle to leave them behind. The Times Makes for near-hypnotically compelling reading, a vivid, hyperreal portrait of human existence that demands intense emotional investment . . . An astonishing achievement: a novel of grand drama and sentiment, but it's a canvas Yanagihara has painted with delicate, subtle brushstrokes. Independent Utterly compelling . . . quite an extraordinary novel. It is impossible to put down . . . And it is almost impossible to forget. Daily Express

    A little life - A huge book.

I love this book more than anything. Bought another copy after lending mine out and had to re read again less than a year after the first time. The book is too deep to go into depth with a review. Heart warming and heart breaking in equal measure. If I could have just one book to read it would be this one. Not for many years has a book affected me the way this one did.

  • Most critical review

    VERY UNPLEASANT READ.

This is the worse book I have EVER read. It is far fetched and highly improbable. The author must have a very strange mind. I would not recommend this

  • So sad. So deep. So brilliant.

I was looking for something new to read and saw this book on a 'Top 100 Must Read' type online site. So thought I'd give it a go. It took a short while to get into the characters and remember who was who (as there were quite a few to begin with). But once in... I was gripped. Such a beautiful, thought provoking book. So sad and distressing at times, but done in such an empathetic way, it didn't upset me too much. The characters are so individually great that you genuinely can't wait to read another page. I have already recommended this book to a friend and bought it for another. This book is so different to your usual 'easy read' type of book and extremely addictive once started. I honestly couldn't stop reading it. Some days, for hours! The content of the book could be too much for some people, but the way the writer portrayed such sadness and badness, made it that much more interesting. Certainly a 5/5 book. Buy. I know you won't regret it.

  • Bad quality

i bought this book having high hopes for it. I am not happy with the way it came, the spine has awful cracks all down and the pages are bent meanwhile the front cover has bends through it too. Not pleased and i will never buy from here again. do not reccomend this

  • Sad

I loved this book up until the last few chapters where it is unbearably sad. I wished for Jude to have a happy ending which is more than he deserved, to be with Willem.

  • A very compelling read

Through examinations of the mundane and the extraordinary, follow the characters of this book as they age and as the grow up. Who are they? What does that mean? Do people change or are they always as they started? I wept like 12 times reading this book, and it will stay with me for a long time. It is not a happy story.
