    Solid Bench Drill

This bench drill is lightweight but very solid & compact. The spring loaded hand wheel gives positive feedback, once you get used to it. (I have been used to using conventional rack & pinion driven drill handles for the last 40 years). The accuracy and run out on the chuck/spindle is very good, even for drilling accurate hole positions in steel. The Laser is a good feature when aligning holes that require drilling diametrically opposite. Although when you use an extended drill chuck one side of the laser is blocked out. The work light is very bright which saves putting on the garage lights on a dull day. A little bit pricey for a bench drill but overall if it proves to be reliable for a couple of years it will have been worth it.

  • Most critical review

Great drill, let down hugely by inaccuracy

The drill is great. Laser cross marking, led illumination of the work area, accurate speed and exact depth measurements. Totally let down however by a chuck that moves a LOT - when using a large drill bit (12mm for example) the end of the drill bit can move by as much as 3mm - which kinda negates the rest of the accuracy benefits of the drill. Shame - as everything else is good.

  • Great for the money

Very useful drill press. It’s not going to be good enough for engineering but will handle lots of tasks. To get any better I would have needed to pay 4times the price Easy to set up, not too heavy and quiet are the strong points Highly recommended for woodworking and light engineering tasks

  • Great addition to the home workshop

Nothing to compare it with as my 1st bench drill. I am not very good at keeping a portable electric drill straight so for me it is a godsend. The only niggle I have is why did they put a wheel on it to operate the drill rather than a 3 spike handle. You cannot keep your hand on the wheel when you want to make a deep drill as it turns round to the back. A knob on the wheel would help as you could keep hold of it, but from a manufacturing view 3 spokes would be simpler. May well try and do a home upgrade. Controls are great with variable speeds at a twist of a knob, great crosshairs laser depth guage and work light. Led display clear and easy to operate.

  • Buy one!

I recently bought the drill after watching several YouTube videos and am glad I did.I also have a conventional pillar drill but am tending to use the Bosch 90% of the time now. I was concerned about possible excessive run out but found it negligible and perfectly acceptable for all my needs and all it’s features are very useful too. If Bosch ever decide to produce a blue “professional “ version I would definitely buy one but am very happy as it is. Can be had for £250 in various places so good value-would recommend without hesitation.

  • A Classic machine fro Bosch works great

good bit of kit for light woodworking used it with various twist drills an up to 32mm foster bit both in soft and hard woods. My only gripe is the handle bit awkward so have added a steering wheel knob which now works great would be nice if it was available fro Bosch.

  • Good quality

Great drill, accurate, quiet, stable base, good vice grip , I like the variable speed, quick release chuck. And small enough to store under the bench.

  • Good machine

Very happy with this Bosch drilling machine. Run out less than 0.1 mm. Vertical adjustment range really useful. Great variable speed control, far better than changing pulley belts. A cast iron base would be better, aluminium not as hard wearing. Good on wood and metal.

  • Bosch PBD40 Bench Drill - Brilliant Tool!

Early days, but so far very impressed with the power, precision and ease of use of this Bosch bench drill. Only used for timber so far, but features like the LED light, the laser cross-hairs and quarter-turn work clamp make this drill a joy to use. Never had a traditional belt-driven bench drill, but don't think I'm going to need one now.

  • Absolutely delighted with this well-designed machine.

I'm really pleased with this machine. It's easy to assemble, robust enough to do the job, yet light enough to move around. It's an all-round well thought-out design with an easily adjusted depth-stop, fully-variable speed control, and a very handy clamp for the object you're drilling. It's perfect for the majority of light to medium scale jobs in the home workshop, but probably wouldn't be the tool for a heavy-duty commercial environment. I principally bought it because the integrated motor gave the device a depth range which exceeded others on the market, another plus point.
