Best instant ramen ever - without question
I’ll start right out by saying, this noodle/broth package for home preparation is not cheap. But if you are a serious ramen fan and aren’t able to get out to your favorite ramen place, this is absolutely the next best option. With creative toppings, you can close your eyes and imagine you are in a fantastic Tokyo or New York City ramen place.
It’s best to boil the noodles very quickly, two or three minutes at the most. Then quickly add the spice packet and broth base packet. Top with whatever you like: shredded nori seaweed, a soft or hard boiled egg, chopped onion or leek, minced garlic … get creative, but keep it Asian/Japanese if possible.
To the uninitiated, let me explain: Ramen noodles are far more than the cheap instant noodle meal familiar to American college students and found in convenience stores and supermarkets all over the world. Those can be fun, but are filled with monosodium glutamate (MSG) and not particularly healthy. This product, on the other hand, offers a really delicious fatty pork broth base, quite a spicy cayenne pepper mixture, and really authentic Japanese ramen noodles. So, it’ll cost you more than $.35 cents or whatever those instant Ramen noodles cost now, and takes just a little bit more effort to prepare—but not much more effort.
I was astounded at how authentic and true to the traditional ramen restaurant the flavor is. The broth is just terrific, and the noodles are not mushy and falling apart when prepaired right—in fact, if you just slightly undercook the noodles till slightly ‘al dente’ and allow them to rest in the bowl for a few minutes, you’ve got noodles that I almost can’t tell apart from good restaurant Ramen. If you are on a tight budget, I don’t recommend these, but if you can splurge a little, go for this: buy many packages and build up a supply. I’m on my fourth package and I might just spring for a half dozen, I want to have these around for a long time.
I’ve been to the restaurant in Midtown Manhattan produced by the same company, and I’m almost embarrassed to admit, I think I prefer the home version better than the restaurant version I had that particular day!
