Gibson J-15 Acoustic Guitar

About this product

Product Information

The Gibson J-15 Acoustic is a showcase guitar with a dreadnought body, a walnut fingerboard, and a bridge with angled sides. The frets are accented with mother-of-pearl dots inlaid into the smooth wood. The pickguard is teardrop-shaped tortoiseshell, a warm visual belied by the polished texture. The J-15 builds on classic North American tonewoods with Sitka spruce sitting comfortably at the top to provide you with plenty of velocity. Sustainable walnut defines the back and sides, adding depth and warmth to the tones without adding much to the overall weight of the guitar. The solid composition is elegant in its simplicity and is built to last, capable of providing you with years of service no matter how often you play or travel. The guitar features a hand-sprayed nitrocellulose finish that allows the instrument to mature with age.

  • Best Value In An American-Made Acoustic Guitar

A real built-in-Bozeman Gibson, crafted from all-US solid tonewoods Spruce top, Walnut sides and back, Maple neck with a walnut inlay and walnut fretboard. IT has a slightly shorter (24.75") and wider (1.725") neck than most acoustics, making for great playability, and that is glued via a typical Gibson dovetail with traditional hide glue. And the finish is hand rubbed nitrocellulose lacquer, not polyurethane. So it's kind of a unique and very old-school spec. There's no fancy inlays or binding, just excellent quality simple stuff. And to finish it all off the setup is done with a German PLEK machine (go YouTube it to see it in action). The sound is closer to a Rosewood-bodied guitar than Mahogany, and the bass holds together under hard strumming - no compression. And the high end has almost as much shimmer as Rosewood. If you're looking for the booming low end of a Martin Dreadnought, you won't find that here, which is a very good thing if you want to play through amplification or record with it. Rather the bass is very well defined and very controlled. I like that. The sound from the LH Baggs pickup is fine, and I'm getting used to the volume control hidden in the sound hole. What I'm not so excited about is the Cordura nylon battery pouch velcroed the end of the neck inside the body. Changing the battery requires loosening all the strings a lot. I'd just as soon have it in a little compartment as part of the endpiece, like on my Taylor. Not a deal-breaker. And I save my favorite thing for last. Neck shape has never been a big deal maker or breaker for me. Until now. I absolutely love the shape and feel of the Maple neck. It reminds me of my maple-necked Telecaster, quick and solid. And that adds confidence to your playing. So, is there a better value in an American acoustic guitar? Not that I found. And I looked. Martins and Taylors were at least $500-$1000 more, and had none of the unique features of the J15. Larrivee is making some interesting guitars in this general range, and so is Breedlove, but none of them lit the flame the Gibson J15.

  • A great all around guitar.

This guitar might seem to some people to be an entry level cut rate Gibson because of the price, but in terms of quality and sound it's as good as anything that they've made. Sounds great, the walnut is a fine tone wood, with tight and prominent bass and clear and strong highs. A good all around guitar. Gibson had or has a real winner with these, snap one up.

  • Made in the USA

American made. Made with American grown tone woods. Under a grand. Hammer-on any string and it rings out. Great volume. Great tone. Great feel. Looks great. It's a Gibson. I like everything about this guitar. I may have to give this one a name.

  • nice size and beautiful looking guitar.

the j15 is a nice looking guitar. this guitar has a big sound, a little brighter than my j45. i like the size of the 15 and 45 ...not too big, not too small. i am always a little nervous about buying online without playing it first. this neck size is nice and comfortable..again not too big, not too small. starting at the barred E it get a bit tiny. i am going to have my guitar guy do a better set up. this is my only complaint, other wise happy with my purchase of this guitar. the right gibson sounds great. i'll see how i feel in a year. all in all, i like the guitar.

  • Great slope shoulder dread

I love the look of the walnut back and sides coupled with the maple neck. But the sound is what got me. Crip clarity and good definition, and nice bass thump, but not overpowering. I'm impressed i must say. It's Gibson, so great craftsmanship. Only thing i don't like is the mini tuners. I will likely replace them with something else, and it will be a killer guitar.
