Awesome synth for the money... if you can find one!
This synth is under rated at times I think. It is easy to use and has unique features like the touch knobs at the top of the unit.The Ultra Nova also has full size keys and a nice keyboard touch. It connects to a DAW via USB too and has it's own librarian software for transferring new patches to the unit. The stock sounds are incredible and has it's own sound somewhere in the middle of analog and digital. Really nice polyphony sounds and good bass sounds too! They are no longer being produced and fall into a cool kinda intermediate/advanced category. This does not sound like and analog synth far from it !!! Buuuuut, I still sounds really awesome!!! The chord feature is the best thing for makeing your sounds you create sound fatter and bigger :) for arpeggios too :) and there's sooo many things to do with it you'll get lost !! Amazing powerhouse synthesizer!
Having owned a used a number of VA synths and any number of VST's I finally picked up an Novation Ultranova. I never owned anything from Novation before so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. What an amazing instrument! This is a synth designed by master synth designers and enthusiasts not by a committee of marketeers. Ultra was not just silly marketing ploy. Most synths are carefully designed to be just interesting enough while NOT including many features that will make you buy the bigger machines the company makes. Not this one. Just about everything including the kitchen SYNC was thrown into the design. You can just picture the designers filling up whiteboards with all the stuff they wanted to put in because they really wanted to make a cool instrument. If you're just into presets, then you'll have to demo the Ultranova to decide. Like most synths some presets are great but many serve as tech demos to show what the synth can do. Most of those voices would never be good in a mix. If you're a synth enthusiast who likes to create their own sounds this machine will not disappoint. All sorts of unique sound shaping features await you. Rarely do you find anywhere near this kind of depth outside of a modular or some crazy VST like Bazille. Don't be fooled, with a 40 source, 20 destination modulation matrix this thing practically IS a modular. Each OSC is identical. No weird jumble of semi-similar oscillators with limitations you have to work around. All the basic analog waves, quite a few digital waves and morphable wave tables! Each OSC has it's own SYNC oscillator. Density and Detune give each oscillator a form of Unison without hitting polyphony. Two sets of oscillators have RING mod outputs as well and the Noise source is entirely separate. There are two very flexible identical filters and each oscillator has it's own filter of sorts called "hardness" which can also be modulated. The 2 main filters have a number of pre-filter distortion models to fatten things up and get a very analog sound. Of course you can throw in OSC drift and phase offset as well to the free-running oscillators. SIX Looping, repeating Envelopes! Three single shot or looping LFO's with basic waves and sequences and wave shaping. Touch controls to animate the sounds during a performance A solid professional key bed. Much better than most little synths. Quick, intuitive, front panel editing with features like OSC solo AND an excellent VST editor that controls the synth like a plugin. Oh yeah... a nice vocoder, chord and arpeggiator functions as well. The list goes on and on. Try to find all this in another synth that doesn't cost $2500. If you are capable of moving beyond presets, this little beast will keep you busy for many many hours. No, I don't work for Novation and they didn't give me anything to write this. Exactly What I Wanted in a Modern Synthesizer
The audio quality is quite exceptional on this machine and that fact is not touted enough by either the manufacturer or reviewers. The low end is deep and the highs are crisp and the mid range is warm and balanced. The range in sound quality from analogue warmth like a Prophet to a shimmering cool like a PPG is admirable. Soft-synths do not quite have this level of fidelity. The complexity of synthesis here is beautiful and thank goodness there is an editor associated with this device because you have a range of complexity in sound creation such that you can stay basic in your subtractive programming or go very esoteric with plenty of waveform and modulation options for which a larger visual area is a necessity lest it become too abtruse. As a live performance synth it has its share of ground breaking real time controllers that other products do not quite have. As an integrated controller and interface device for DAW it holds its own against anything out there in the marketplace. I love that it is so compact and light and yet so powerful for sound creation--love the vocoder too--with a well made keyboard with enough keys to still be reasonable/useful. I find it is kind of over-sold for the electronica, DJ user as it is so much more than that. Because of its great sound quality and synthesis capability it is applicable to any creative endeavor regardless of genre. The 18 voices are quite adequate even when too many is never enough. This box is so underrated and undersold in the marketplace that unless you have played one you would never guess how musically strong, valuable and relevant they are. You can buy them used for obscenely low bid prices (do a 'sold listings search' to see) when you consider just how advanced they are. Remember, hardware is more stable and long lasting and the Ultranova is a keeper over the long run.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Underrated gem
