Works great, but feels like Fisher Price...

Great performance, however it creaks in my hand when operating and almost feels like it will break. I suppose I'm just used to the solid feel of the NuTone central vac in my old home, or the ruggedness of an old school Kirby that Mom handed down. Everything is made of plastic these days, mostly for reducing production cost and weight. Dyson could really improve this product by beefing up the material. I don't care about a few ounces, I want it to perform and last. Beater bar shuts down quick when sucking up a rug corner, etc, which is a good feature. Love not dealing with nasty filters. No onboard storage for the tangle free turbine tool. Only other feature I would have really liked would be a retractable cord. -WDH, Basking Ridge NJ

    Disappointed buyer....

In the past, I've had canister sweepers but decided to go with something new. I'd heard a lot about the kinetic big ball and purchased it. I am pleased with its performance on carpeted surfaces. However, I was disappointed to find that the big ball just seems to push dirt along, on hard surfaces like my tile kitchen floor and hardwood floors. I purchased two add'l attachments (the articulating head and a flat head) and this makes it bearable; however, I don't like sweeping with the hose that is needed when these heads are used. All in all, I am very disappointed and wish I had made another choice. Live and learn.......should have tried it first.

  • Great on pet hair without losing suction

I've waited over 6 months to review this vacuum as I wanted a realistic test in our home over a prolonged period of time to give it an honest assessment. We've used everything from cheap $88 Eureka's to more expensive Hoovers and I wish I would have bought the Dyson a long time ago. Here’s my take on it: First, you need to know that we have two dogs: a short-haired Border Collie and a long-haired Australian Shepherd. The Aussie's shedding has been the kiss of death to several vacuums (we bought three within a year's time). We also have a combination of tile, hardwood laminates, and brand new carpeting in our home. The Good: The marketing is true; this vacuum really does not loose suction power. Every other vacuum I've owned has decreasing suction over time and I've had a messy job of cleaning out the filters to get to the point where I can restore a fraction of the initial suction. The Dyson has as much suction 6 months later as it does when I took it out of the box, and I don't miss having to clean out dirty filters. It does a fantastic job of getting all the pet-hair out of my carpet and all the other places it accumulates in the house. If something does get lodged in the vacuum, it makes a hissing noise and it’s obvious there’s something stuck in there. Similarly, if something gets sucked up in the rotating carpet brush (i.e. a sock or curtain corner), the rotation automatically stops, thus eliminating the smell of burning rubber belts. The first time something got lodged in our Dyson, I couldn’t figure out where the obstruction was and so I shot off a quick email to Dyson support. I got a response within 12 hours and they resolved my issue on the first point of contact. Additionally, the ball design and fairly thin sweeper head allows me to vacuum farther under the bed/couches/etc. than I could with a standard upright. Finally, the cord and hoses are quite long and I can vacuum most of 1700 sq. ft. from a single outlet. I can also leave the vacuum sitting at the bottom of the stairs and reach about 10 stairs up using the hose and wand tool. The Bad: Like all bag-less vacuums, the Dyson canister is dirty to dump out. It has a nice quick-release and dumping mechanism but I still have to reach up into the canister after most vacuums to pull out the pet hair. The vacuum is also a bit heavy. I don’t mind it but my wife would not enjoy lugging it up and down the stairs. The furniture brush is novel (it has rotating brushes encased in plastic to keep them free from hair, string, etc.) but there is no place on the vacuum to store it. The only other minor issue that I have is that the manual is done in all pictures. I consider myself a visual learner but I still had to contact support when I had an issue as the pictures just didn’t communicate everything they needed to. But then, how often does one refer to a vacuum manual? Overall, I’m super-pleased with our Dyson purchase and would purchase it again in a heartbeat. It’s the only vacuum I’ve found that handles our pet hair without losing suction over time. Nice job Dyson!

  • Dyson amazing light weight with great features!!!

I absolutely love my new dyson. I vacuumed my whole house with my old vacuum, they went over it again with the dyson, and the bin was almost all the way full after I already vacuumed it!!!!! I could not be happier with the decision to make this purchase!!! I go the animal one since I have a cat, and it picks up all of her hair its amazing, I think I might start vacuuming her, lol!

  • Sleek-looking vacuum strong enough to pick up dog fur consistently

Vacuums siberian husky fur off our carpet reliably. Easy to empty. Fairly easy to maneuver except the ball occasionally prevents the vacuum from reaching under furniture. It would be nice if it were easier for me to go from floor-vacuum mode to wand-suctioning mode though; it's not just detaching the hose, attaching a brush, and then reach out to vacuum but rather a detach the hose, extend or remove the firm plastic covering, attach the brush, unwind the hose as you reach to vacuum a surface, and then beginning cleaning.

  • Not bad. Not as good as my 10 yr old original Dyson.

I am glad that I purchased this at a discounted price. At this price point I am satisfied. However if I paid full price I would would be kinda pissed. First and foremost the suction on this is great and as expected from Dyson. So if this is all you need or are concerned with then get it. The next thing I noticed was the overall construction of it felt cheap. From the attachments, to the extended hose, the canister, handle etc. It just didn't feel as solid as my original one made almost 10 yrs ago. (upright yellow one DC14) Next the canister is about a 1/3 of the size as I am used to and with dog around the house and mostly hardwood floors I felt like I empty it constantly. Then it took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to empty it and safely put it back together. The older canisters like this newer one have a button or trigger to pull and the bottom opens up. Then to take the canister off you have to push in this plastic piece that is not easily noticeable and it comes off. Putting it back together I thought i was going to break it as it has to be lined up with the cheap plastic button on the side and the canister has to be tilted slightly to ensure a seal is made with rubber seal along the bottom. Next the hose and attachments just don't feel as solidly made as the old ones. I get the idea of making one tool expand to make another to save space but I think its a fail. The hose itself did not flex all the well when using the tools. Lastly the machine got REALLY hot on the right side of the ball. Maybe this is normal but I was just surprised. This does maneuver around objects and the house GREAT once you kinda get used to it. All in all I am happy with it after just using it twice in two weeks. If I never had the original one to compare this one too I would have rated it higher. If you can snag it at a discount from Dyson Outlet definitely do so. Hope this helps someone.

  • Cinetic Dyson Big Ball Animal 2 is the best vacuum ever produced

As a custodian with 25-years of experience and having used virtually every vacuum on the market, I can say without reservation that the Cinetic Dyson Big Ball Animal 2 is the best vacuum ever produced. I'm sad to hear that Dyson is phasing out corded vacuums in favor of their stick vacuum V-series. It's just my opinion, but the Big Ball beats the new powerful V-11 by a mile on wall to wall carpeting. Yes, the Dyson V-11 can go where the Big Ball struggles under tough spots, such as dining room tables, beds and other furniture, since it doesn't lay flat. However, the ball makes the vacuum extremely maneuverable and versatile. Nevertheless, the Big Ball features an extremely long hose, which allows you to do an entire flight of stairs, while the machine remains at the bottom. The hose, as well as a plethora of attachments will allow you to get under the tough spots mentioned above. Although the Big Ball is heavy, I would expect it to be considering the powerful motor and sturdy assembly. Removing and reconnecting the dirt canister is incredibly easy, yet strong enough to use as a carry handle. Ultimately, it's the cleaning performance that makes this vacuum remarkable and rise to the top of all vacuums on the market today. It cleans with one pass without leaving a trace of dirt or debris. It also cleans right up to the edge of a wall, which most other vacuums fail to accomplish. Since they are being phased out, closeout deals can be found on new machines (not refurb) for $290 to $350. That's half off the original sticker price. I strongly recommend that you buy one now, before they disappear. If you have a lot of carpet and demand flawless performance cleaning, this is the machine for you.

  • Love it

This thing is amazing. Within the last 30 days my house has been shampooed, had Kirby demonstration, and vacuumed multiple times with our old vacuum. We tried this out in the room the Kirby was demonstrated and it still filled the canister twice. I still cannot believe how much dirt the Dyson picks up even though I've personally seen it happen.

  • 2nd Dyson

I had my first Dyson for over 10 years and was so happy with it that I always knew I would get another Dyson. This is my first with the ball and it's kind of odd to get used to using but works great. The only negative is the canister size. Guess I am just used to the larger canister on my previous model.

  • Nice but, Some upgrades and some downgrades in design.

I thought i was upgrading from my old Dyson animal to this one. From the looks of it the actual vacuum portion is probably an upgrade, but the specifice animal part has no place to store on the unit itself. Let's start with the wand nice upgrade to dual purpose in one piece and I like the click in feature. The ball started with smooth motion but since, has a dragging or grinding noise. The carpet beater does it's job but doesn't protect the vacuum from sucking up its own cord. Which still wraps around where the wand is unable to come off without unwrapping the whole thing. The redesign for the wand is not smooth or user friendly, I felt like I downgraded from 10 year old unit. I like how the head is lower profile on the sides but the big ball is a hindrance when trying to vacuum under objects. The transition from upright to rolling is not smooth either those wheels slam up and sometimes all on there own and the vacuum falls over. I do like the upgraded button control that activates the carpet beater. Button is easy to release the container prematurely when emptying creating a huge mess. old design was more secure.
