  • Good value budget lens

The Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Telephoto Zoom Lens seems to have excellent build quality even though it is an all plastic lens including the mount. The STM auto focus is very quick and very quiet, I would advise anyone looking for a budget zoom lens to buy this rather than the Canon EF-S 70-300mm f4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens which has much poorer picture quality and is possibly the worsted lens in the Canon range. .

  • Superb value

Great lens, quality for the price is outstanding. I purchased this as a fill in til I get the new sigma 70-200. This 55-250 will be great for outdoor portraits at the telephoto end with flash lighting. Fast focus and sharp, great glass in a plastic but firm body. Type of lens you won't be too upset if you broke by accident etc but you'd happily buy it again due to it's performance

  • Great buy

Only had this for a few weeks but I really like this lens. It's very compact but has a really sharp image, reasonable optical stabilisation (difficult to get great stabilisation at this focal length) and a very smooth bokeh when zoomed and under low aperture. The STM focusing is good too but takes some getting used to being fully digital

  • Amazing value.

This lens can give you pin sharp images but you need to be steady as the long zoom will exaggerate camera shake. If, like me you got it for sports photography, I recommend you use a monopod for extra stability. The price is amazing for such quality.

  • Best budget telephoto for Canon EF-S DSLR's

The good: Very sharp at all focal lengths. Lightweight. Good image stabilisation. Silent auto-focus. Negligible colour fringing. Usable at widest aperture. The not so good: Contrast a bit muted (easy fix in image software). Doesn't come with a hood. For the white-box price this lens is very good value. Sharp and easy to use.

  • Wow amazing sharp images

I like a nice sharp image this 50-250 std lens delivers, it picks up the things even my eyes cannot see, I owned the Canon 70-200 is usm ll 2.8L lens which l loved for years and so it should produce quality for near on £1800, after reading many reviews I decided to buy the Canon 50-250 for £125 new OK it's all plastic and very light but wow very impressed indeed, don't think will ever buy an L lens again, just buy and enjoy.

  • Very sharp optics

I wanted a zoom lens that was not going to bankrupt me and yet was able to produce sharp photos. I read the reviews of many lenses but was confused because there were so many that were recommended, yet these same lenses always seemed to have contradictory remarks said about them in terms of sharpness at the edges, or at the centre etc. Finally i came across the canon STM version and almost all the people who used this lens were unanimous in their praise. I did further research and investigation; looked at sample shots taken with the lens; checked out YouTube descriptions and hands on reviews. Finally I looked at the reviews from dpview, which i have always considered to be the ultimate deciding base with its thorough, strict and honest conclusion and verdict. So i decided to purchase the lens from eBay at a very good price. And i must say i am not disappointed at all. The lens is exactly as described. It is outstandingly sharp. It is also remarkably silent when focusing. I did not believe it was focusing because i did not hear the customary whirring sound associated with zoom lenses. The focus was there instantaneously. All in all i am very very happy with this amazingly, sharp and silent lens. Why cant Canon make other lenses with this quality as cheaply as this one. It would be nice to be able to afford a decent lens at a decent price. Some of their prices are beyond ridiculous. Not every one of us, who are photographers, is able to pay such extravagant prices for glass. They should not charge such exorbitant prices because they CAN. This is why monopolies are dangerous and should be constantly challenged. Canon group is a monopoly. That means in effect it can charge whatever prices it likes without fear or a care in the world. And it DOES. It doesn't care what the consumer thinks. It simply robs him or her blind and carries on regardless. That is a what monopoly does. Therefore, when a lens of such good quality sells for the cheap price that the 55-250 is STM lens sells for, one has little choice but to seize the opportunity to snap it up. That price is reasonable, and all their other lenses should be just as reasonable too. Canon will still make a humongous profit. It just will not make an OBSCENE AMOUNT of profit. Surely in life there must be limits to GREED.

  • Good first extra lens on a budget

If your on a budget or still justifying carrying an SLR over a camera phone it’s great. Certainly opens up what an SLR can do over the standard lens but adds a bit more thinking to taking a shot too!
