Great technology demonstrator, but insufficient image quality

I bought it to explore the possibilities of Light Field imagery. For that purpose it is great. But I find the pictures to be subpar for the price, size and complexity. Especially around foreground subjects it is easy to get a hazy halo that makes pictures look unnatural. This might improve as my skills get better, but still, the camera should not be mistaken for a great performer.

    Fun & Obsolete Camera

Cons: Listing the cons first (since camera is no longer made) 1. Camera company is technically gone, no parts or support. 2. No built-in stabilization. 3. When you can find batteries they are expensive. Pros: 1. Very cool camera to play around with. 2. Light-Field technology is ahead of it's time like this camera. 3. Camera is purchased by people who know what it is and want the camera. By today's standards the image quality isn't up to par but fun camera to use.

  • A New Paradigm

The Lytro Illum is a triumph of design and functionality. The interface is direct and well considered. The camera was designed and manufactured to sell for around $1500 so the presentation and finish are top notch. And if you take some time with your photos, the results can be effective, maybe startling. The camera appears to be at the end of its production cycle and no follow-up is expected, hence the recent pricing. There are extensive training videos on how to set up and use the camera and as of June 2016 there was still e-mail support. My interest in the camera was to produce 3D photos and the output is very good both printed and on-screen - I use the red/blue glasses but there are other options for 3D. Theoretically the camera would be excellent for macro work. The problem is that since the camera is so unlike other cameras, there is a non-trivial learning curve. Others have noted software crashes but my experience has been good if not perfect. Note that the files are in a proprietary format (although they can be exported, edited in PS or whatever and then imported) and you need to use the Lytro software to edit and process the Lytro files. It requires determination to become proficient with the hardware and software. This camera will be no threat to other cameras in terms of resolution (although it is perfectly acceptable to many applications) but it will produce photos you can almost walk around inside of. It made me think about composing in three dimensions and I take that experience back to my normal shooting. So if you have some time and are intellectually curious, this camera which is selling at less than 20% of its target price may help you see a scene in a new way. Just do not expect to pick it up and do something interesting without being willing to put in some work and concentration first.

  • lytro Illum review

This is a well made camera that requires you to re-learn how to shoot while composing for depth. It lacks a feature to allow you to enlarge the image on the LED screen to review your picture. All in all it is fun to use.

  • A camera for the pro

The ILLUM is a camera for the professional, but with unique features that even the non professional can make studio like images. I'm not a pro but mu pictures look like they were taken by one. I only hope that with the next firmware update they can add video recording feature. Making this the must have for short movie producers.

  • Lytro Illum Light Field Digital Camera - AMAZING!

This is the most incredible camera I have ever used. You just about need to forget everything you ever learned about photography and start from scratch. Whoever designed this was a genius. The styling is beautiful... designed to be held in a photographers hands. Thankfully, Lytros has a great web site with a lot of help available. I figure with some dedication and play time, I will master this camera and never look back on a new way to take pictures.

  • Quick access to Plenoptic imaging and usable image sizes.

It is one of the few affordable light field cameras that I can use for a project I'm working on, and I got it in just a few days. Works great and not too much wear and tear.

  • A gimic camera

This is camera is an addon camera, not your main camera. It is a gimic camera that can do someting extra to your images, but the total image qualety is to pore to print stuff big. But overall a great buy!

  • Excellent camera for tech lovers!

Mine was brand new in the box. perfect condition. Light field cameras are a very different beast from your standard camera. There is a great post-processing app free from Lytros that lets you adjust focus, aperture and even get 3d images from a single shot. Image resolution is about 5MP, sharp color and image,

  • Lytro Illum is a sleeper

The challenge is to get used to thinking differently about how you execute your shots. That takes some effort to make the adjustment. The user interface is the most advanced of any other camera on market and makes the transition in your approach easier. I still have a way to go before being completely comfortable but believe that the results will pay off big time.
