Amazing piece of kit, well worth the money!
This is by far the best gadget I've bought in a long time. This runs kodi like an absolute dream. I thought my amazon fire stick was decent especially when comparing it to my cheap Chinese android box, but this takes it to a new level. It's widely regarded as the best android tv box and best for running kodi and I can definitely see why. It has some of the most popular premium tv/film apps as standard and there are more you can download straight from the play store. If you're technically minded you can even sideload apps that the store doesn't have. The only slight disappointing thing on the tv side of things is that you can't get the itv hub and 4od apps at the moment, however this really wasn't a big issue as it had chrome cast built in, so you can use the app on your phone and stream it straight to the box with the click of a button.
It may seem quite pricey for an android tv box, but it's so much more than that. This is a tv player and games console in one. It offers a service called GeForce now for £7.49 a month which lets you stream and play games from the nvidia games library. It has a pretty impressive selection too so plenty to please the average recreational gamer. If you're a bit more of a serious gaming enthusiast, you can stream games directly to your tv from your pc at up to 4k HDR and 60fps. I can't comment on this personally as I don't have a gaming pc, but it has excellent reviews online. So far I've spent most of my gaming time on the console utilising the other great feature; retro console emulation. You need to be at least semi-able with technology for this, but there are plenty of tutorials and walk throughs on YouTube explaining how to set it up. There are a multitude of great console emulators out there letting you play all of your favourite retro games from systems like the snes, megadrive, gameboy, gamegear, n64, ps1 and loads more. If you've ever tried these emulators on another android system you might well have run into constant problems as a lot of the emulators require some decent processing power to run, but the shield runs them brilliantly. Obviously you might still come across the odd problem here and there as emulation will never be exactly the same as the physical console and some games will always be very difficult to run on an emulator, but in general the shield does an amazing job due to its powerful processor and graphics. I'd say it easily handles many emulators as well as some hi spec pc's.
I think when you take into account all that it offers, it's pretty easy to see why the shield is the price that it is. It's a brilliant piece of kit and as they say, you get what you pay for. Hands down the best android tv box currently on the market and if you're even casually into gaming then that should seal the deal. I'm so impressed with my experience so far that I'm gutted I didn't buy one sooner. It certainly would've saved me a lot of hassle dealing with slow to respond kodi on my underwhelming Chinese android box and fire stick. If I had the money spare right now, I'd by another for my bedroom to replace the fire stick and I certainly plan to as soon as I possibly can.
