  • Upcycled as a Wireless Access Point/Range Entender

We've got a BT Smart Hub 2 as our main wifi router. The problem is that we have a dead spot in the house, where there is a Chromecast TV & Peloton bike: both of which need decent wifi to work without buffering. I considered BT's disks, but came across a blog post, entitled "Reuse a spare BT Home Hub as a Wireless Access Point." So, I bought this Home Hub 4 (HH4) and followed the steps. I used a couple of TP Link powerline extenders, which use the house wiring to distribute the internet signal. Once they're working, plug the HH4 into one, log into the router and update the IP address to 192.168.1.60. Then hit reset and log back into the router again, this time disabling DHCP. Press reset again and then viola: wifi in the deadzone. Don't be concerned that the light stays orange and the 'b' flashes red, remember you're not plugging into a DSL connection. It's now stored in a draw out of site but working fine. Speed test showed 35mb down, 5mb up which is similar to what our Smart Hub 2 sees. I live a way from the Exchange so we never see more than that anyway. It's supported the Chromecast TV & Peloton simultaneously streaming, with no buffering. Thoroughly recommended as a cheap way to extend wifi signal.

  • Good enough if it's cheap enough

BT hubs are not the best, but they work well enough for simple situations. This one is currently my main modem/router/wifi, but I've also used it as a secondary wifi access point to extend the coverage, using powerline connectors back to the main hub.

  • Quality technology

Good solid product works straight out of the box with little setup requirements Only 4stars as power supply unit developed a fault and failed. Smart looking. Obviously now unit has been upgraded to accommodate fibre technology infinity.

  • Good replacement

This is more reliable than the 3 Hub 6's I have had before which all packed the moment it could smell a thunderstorm!
