Amazing scanner give professional quality at affordable price.

I’d been thinking for a long time about weather to get the V800 or V850. As a professional photographer I demand high res scans. This can be very costly if you have them done by your processing lab £25+ per roll of 120 film. Plus you often only want one or two frames not the whole film. The V850 offers all the whistle and bells but at a price. If you have a high work output the V850 is probably the way to go with it’s two sets of film holders and marginally faster scan times. However I’m a fine art and landscape photographer so speed and high out put is not essential as I’m often working with just a few frames at a time so the V800 is more than up to the job and will save you a couple of hundred pounds. Both the Epson and Silver Fast 8 software are very good though the Silver fast takes a bit of getting use to. The scan quality for a 6x6 or 6x4/5 meg is exceptional producing tiff files of around 160mb. I’ve had these blown up to 20x20 exhibition size and the quality is spot on. The dust reduction is excellent and a must with flat bed scanners. If you want to squeeze the most out of the V800 upgrade the SilverFast software to the Ai this will give you multi exposure which will bring more detail out of shadow areas and the option to calibrate it. SilverFast offer a discount so it will cost you around £80. This will virtually bring the V800 on a par with the V850

Potentially great, let down by film holders.

This is the third model of scanner I've owned. The previous two were also Epson scanners so I had faith in the name alone. In terms of resolution, DMax, and speed it is excellent. The Digital ICE film cleaning works a treat too, on colour film. However, ICE doesn't work with true black and white film such as Ilford FP4+, Kodak T-Max etc. In order to get clean scans from these films all dust must be removed from the light path between the LED and the TPU. This is where the V800 fails badly. To help keep the film flat, the film holders are fitted with ANR material made not from glass but perspex - no matter how much I tried, using blowers, compressed air, anti-static brushes, I found it impossible to remove the dust from the perspex. Third-party solutions are available, but this scanner costs enough as it is. It is beyond me why Epson have fitted the film holders with perspex inserts, because they make the scanning of film other than colour or chromogenic black and white (Ilford XP2, for instance) un-workable.

  • Expensive but worth it.

Fairly simple to use and excellent image quality for a flatbed. Scans look as good as those produced from a dedicated scanner (Plustek) in my opinion but the convenience of being able to scan 12 slides or 18 negs in one go makes it so more user friendly. It’s quite large but appears to be fairly robust And well-made. Comes with free Epson Scan software which is basic but gets the job done and is ideal for batch scanning very quickly. The best images can always be re-scanned using the included Silverfast SE software which allows more control and tends to produce slightly better results, certainly when sharpening images or removing dust and scratches etc.

  • An excellent negative scanner.

So far I have only used this as a negative scanner for 35mm film. Once I got past the initial learning curve I have found it to be a good fast scanner. Being able to scan up to 18 negatives at a time is a real time saver and so I am able to proof my old negative collection at a steady pace. The initial problem I had with it was static on the negative carrier, however I bought a spray bottle of an antistatic solution, sprayed a soft microfibre spectacle cleaning cloth until it was barely damp and wiped it with that. It has largely cured the problem. The colours of the scans are good, the software differentiates between different film types very well and the grain and dust removal tools in the software are very effective. It comes in a large solid cardboard box which is an excellent storage case when not in use.

  • Great!

This printer is absolutely amazing. I have read things online saying this one was not great for scanning medium format negatives but I had no problem at all. The images look great!

  • For an amateur, like myself this will prove to be far more capable than I am.

I am new to this scanner so still trying to lean about it. Had an initial problem with the supplied disc which would not load onto my PC. (I am running windows 10). However once I registered with Epson online and downloaded a slightly later version of software everything worked well. Have used the Epson software to scan slides, negatives and prints as well as the supplied Silverfast. Basic settings are easy to follow and will produce acceptable results for me (an amateur). Serious photographers will need to play around with the many adjustments.

  • Almost a perfect scanner

I have negatives and slides in multiple formats from 35mm through to 5x4 large format. With several thousand negatives to scan and archive I needed a solution that would help me to batch scan. Reading reviews on the internet, most reviewers commented that for 35mm scans a dedicated film scanner gives better resolution. However, I did not want to purchase either a scanner that is no longer supported, such as the Nikon range, or a new scanner that has to be manually fed one slide at a time. The Epson V800 allows me to scan up to 18 35mm negs in one batch using the supplied holders, or up to 24 negs with the older V700 neg holders. Whilst I am not going to get a pin sharp A3 print from a 35mm colour neg scan, the results from the Epson are more than acceptable, especially after playing around with the Silverfast settings. Now to the maligned negative holders. A lot of people have complained about the plastic anti-newton inserts in the neg carriers but here's my take. For colour film I find the neg holders work perfectly, especially with badly curled film. The insert holds them flat, and by using infra red dust removal in the scanning software, dust isn't much of an issue. Saying that they are a pain to keep clean and for black and white film I would recommend buying the V700 holders, which cost around £14 each. Infra red dust removal does not work on true black and white film (or Ektachrome) and plastic inserts in both the 35mm and medium format holders are dust magnets. The V700 holders do not have inserts, and hold more negs (24 for 35mm and two strips of medium format film). Using the V700 results in a lot less manual spotting with black and white film. In terms of the software, I find Silverfast to be excellent, but have upgraded to the full Ai version. Especially the frame detect, which is very useful for different neg holders. I did try Vuescan but it was painful to set up with the V700 holders compared to Silverfast. The large number of film profiles in Silverfast also was a bonus as compared to Vuescan or the Epson scanning program. All in all, an excellent scanner, particularly if you have large numbers of negs or slides to scan.

  • Great scanner.

Scanner works well - new software/drivers from Epsom seem to have recovered the usefulness after Apple updated their operating system.

  • Epson V800 scanner

This is a very powerful and accurate scanner that produces excellent results when scanning prints or film. The software is a little dated but still compatible with the latest Mac OS, but does require an update.
