Great sound and value
30+ years an audiofile, but these days I'm more inclined to pro gear so this was my first try of a closed back 'monitor' headphone. Previously I've used some expensive and highly regarded open designs intended for hi-fi use but took a punt on the M40x as general opinion seems to rate them. Well, me too! They are surprisingly even toned with just a hint of mid-bass lift/warmth and top end lift in the 'air' region - but it's slight. For a closed design they sound quite open and lack the colouration often found in closed back designs. None of that hollow 'drainpipe' effect in the mids. Response is extended and you wouldn't want more top end extension IME. Lows are punchy and roll away evenly below 40-50Hz. They work great driven by my Focusrite interface but also have plenty of level when connected to my Sony phone. The two supplied cables are of good quality and the option of a coiled cable is nice. I've been running mine for only a day so too early for a comfort rating but they certainly aren't uncomfortable and sit very securely. Overall very impressed. Don't splash out on gimmicky high end audiophile headphones because these do a great all-round job and are a bargain for the money. Headphones came with everything like new, super comfy and great sounding, can easily listen for hours!! Need high volumes on iPhone or a tablet to drive these to normal volumes, but are still too loud at full volume. The best sound I can get is through an amplifier and CD player or record player obviously... However they have exceptional sound quality through anything compared with my other over ears. Very rugged and durable it seems and the ear cups have a large degree of movement which is great! Also the headband is very, very stretchy so will not break on big heads like mine.
