About this product

Product Information

Was the Battle of Hastings a French victory? Non! William the Conqueror was Norman and hated the French. Were the Brits really responsible for the death of Joan of Arc? Non! The French sentenced her to death for wearing trousers. Was the guillotine a French invention? Non! It was invented in Yorkshire. Ten centuries' worth of French historical 'facts' bite the dust as Stephen Clarke looks at what has really been going on since 1066 ... From the Norman (not French) Conquest, to XXX, it is a light-hearted - but impeccably researched - account of all out great-fallings out. In short, the French are quite right to suspect that the last 1,000 years have been one long British campaign to infuriate them. And it's not over yet...

  • Explains an awful lot about French ambivalence towards Britain.

We always knew that the EEC was set up primarily for the benefit of France/ de Gaulle. Here is the background to why so many French dislike the English in particular. I read this first on Kindle but enjoyed it so much I bought the printed version. Clarke sets the record straight on numerous aspects in a way that is both humerous and interesting making it an easy read while also being educational. I enjoy reading but have rately been delighted by a book more than this one.

  • Easy history

Absolutely compelling, brilliant writing style. I couldn't put it down, some amazing facts. If they taught history this way at school I am convinced the results would be better and one cannot get bored.
