Product Information

LONGLISTED FOR THE SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION A book like no other - the tale of a gripping quest to discover the identity of history's most notorious murderer and a literary high-wire act from the legendary writer and director of Withnail and I. For over a hundred years, 'the mystery of Jack the Ripper' has been a source of unparalleled fascination and horror, spawning an army of obsessive theorists, and endless volumes purporting finally to reveal the identity of the brutal murderer who terrorised Victorian England. But what if there was never really any 'mystery' at all? What if the Ripper was always hiding in plain sight, deliberately leaving a trail of clues to his identity for anyone who cared to look, while cynically mocking those who were supposedly attempting to bring him to justice? In THEY ALL LOVE JACK, the award-winning film director and screenwriter Bruce Robinson exposes the cover-up that enabled one of history's most notorious serial killers to remain at large. More than twelve years in the writing, this is much more than a radical reinterpretation of the Jack the Ripper legend, and an enthralling hunt for the killer. A literary high-wire act reminiscent of Tom Wolfe or Hunter S. Thompson, it is an expressionistic journey through the cesspools of late-Victorian society, a phantasmagoria of highly placed villains, hypocrites and institutionalised corruption. Polemic, forensic investigation, panoramic portrait of an age, underpinned by deep scholarship and delivered in Robinson's inimitably vivid and scabrous prose, THEY ALL LOVE JACK is an absolutely riveting and unique book, demolishing the theories of generations of self-appointed experts - the so-called 'Ripperologists' - to make clear, at last, who really did it; and more importantly, how he managed to get away with it for so long.

  • Bruce writes Deliciously!

Painstaking research must have gone into the book. I've learned more about the history of my country while reading this book than I did at school. Seriously true. Read it.

Not just another run of the mill book on this subject, this is an in depth study recommended for anybody who thinks they already know everything about the J the R mystery. A good read for anybody discovering this fascinating subject for the first time.

  • Not just another 'Ripper' conspiracy theory.

I approached Bruce Robinson's mammoth 850 page tome with a sense of nervous anticipation, dread and anxiety. After being promised that THEY ALL LOVE JACK was more than just a rehash of previously published theories, I really wanted the book to offer me something other than what has been a subject I have returned to many, many times on the years. I'm pleased to say the book delivers. Painstakingly researched - apparently 15 years to research and bring the manuscript to print - with a wealth of explanatory background to the main event and generously illustrated (including some images never before seen in a JTR book) TALJ is not a book to be consumed in one sitting, though it has a page-turning intensity that makes that a distinct possibility for some. Without giving Robinson's 'funny little game' away, it offers Ripper enthusiasts some real meat to sink their teeth into and the evidence to back up most of what is being said is compelling. The strength of the book is the way in which the author approaches the subject, or rather refuses to approach the subject. I should warn readers that the authors choice of vernacular is a bit fruity on occasions and I also think it's fair to say that Mr Robinson will not be invited to any soirée at Buckingham Palace anytime soon and is equally unlikely to have the Metropolitan Police turn a blind eye to any of his parking indiscretions either. It is irreverent, though respectful of the lives destroyed by the monster 'Jack'. His main suspect is not a new addition to the Ripper legend and some readers might be disappointed to see 'that name' again, but bear with the book, as I say the evidence is detailed, exhaustive and compelling. Mr a Robinson also delivers his unholy verdict on a raft of other 'Ripper' theories, writers and their suspects, backing up his disbelief and displeasure with plenty of hard evidence and undeniable logic. I think the last quarter of the volume is not as strong as the rest of the book and there may be a very good reason for that. It wasn't just 'Jack' who had a habit of making his victims disappear, it seems. Apart from a couple of niggles, overall I was impressed by the quality of the prose, the material and the way in which the seemingly endless and complex 'Ripper' permutations are all tied together like a rather attractive floral tribute. Anti-establishment, irreverent, informative and very well written, THEY ALL LOVE JACK has to be an essential book for all students and devotees of the subject. Maybe the mystery, sometimes as thick as London fog though it is, is finally lifting...
