About this product

Product Information

'What a radical thing, these days, to have written a book so full of warmth and kindness ... Gorgeous' Max Porter, author of Lanny One summer following the Second World War, Robert Appleyard sets out on foot from his Durham village. Sixteen and the son of a coal miner, he makes his way across the northern countryside until he reaches the former smuggling village of Robin Hood's Bay. There he meets Dulcie, an eccentric, worldly, older woman who lives in a ramshackle cottage facing out to sea. Staying with Dulcie, Robert's life opens into one of rich food, sea-swimming, sunburn and poetry. The two come from different worlds, yet as the summer months pass, they form an unlikely friendship that will profoundly alter their futures. This book really makes you think, although at times I thought it was a little far fetched...you need some imagination for this one. It made me laugh out loud at times, and that's a rare commodity these days. So, give it a go, it's certainly worth the reading. It helps if you know the Bay, which is why I bought the book in the first place. The cover alone would sell it to me.

  • Fascinating and affirming. Help comes to someone in need from an unexpected source.

This is a well-written book set just after the Second World War in the North east of England. It is an interesting insight into that period and the deprivations which still lasted. It is told from the point of view of a 16 year old lad. It is a gentle and interesting book.

  • The title is a bit mystifying.

An excellent easy to read book. The offing is a bit of land between the sea and the sk.

  • Dull picture postcard story

The essence of the story was missing. Flowery language without a real purpose.
