I have always enjoyed watching these films many of which can be readily viewed on the excellent TV channel, Talking Pictures. Whilst the book is relatively inexpensive and of good quality the content is sadly lacking.
The films and television series made at Merton are certainly listed but anyone seeking some in depth background or anecdotes behind any of them will be disappointed. A plot synopsis and cast is provided with perhaps the odd reference to a participating actor appearing in other features and also a passing nod as to any scenes shot in the locality of Merton Park. I wondered if the author has ever seen the Reel Streets website which shows latter day comparison views of many British films; The 1960 feature, The Criminal was filmed on location at the old Hurst Park racecourse.
All in all a book for those who find a list of titles interesting but with little else to commend it.
I have been obsessed with Merton Park Studios since I first saw one of the Edgar Wallace supporting features at my local ABC cinema, The Lyric Wellingborough. Very well made and well worth watching, I have the complete boxed set, also the Scotland Yard and Scales of Justice films. In my opinion they were among the best supporting features around, and the cast lists read like a who’s who of British talent. An excellent reference book.
