Planar Magnetic Headphone Technology At An Affordable Price!

The Massdrop version of the Hifiman HE-400i, branded as the HE-4XX is an excellent sounding headphone. When the HE-400i was introduced a few years ago, it retailed for about $500. At the time it was considered an excellent value for a planar magnetic headphone (most of the planar magnetic headphones on the market at that time were far more expensive). A few years ago Massdrop decided to offer their own version of the HE-400i, while improving the headphone's overall sound signature and build quality. The result is the HE-4XX; an upgraded version of the Hifiman HE-400i for a paltry $170. Needless to say, the HE-4XX has been a tremendous success for Massdrop and Hifiman. The only caveat in regard to these headphones (as has been the case with virtually all Hifiman products) is quality control. There have been some issues regarding build quality, so those who would consider purchasing these headphones should understand this in advance. Also read message boards such as Super Best Audio Friends, Head-Fi and AudioScienceReview for more user feedback on these products. I am really enjoying my HE-4XX headphones and I'm very pleased that I can run them directly from the headphone output of my Amazon Fire HD10. At 35 OHMS, the HE-4XX plays to fairly loud levels directly out of the HD10, however, improves significantly when used with a dedicated headphone amplifier. For the money, the HE-4XX offers tremendous value.

    Good headphones worth the try.

For me because I'm a big guy it's comfortable. Quality wise it good but for my taste it's a little shy on the top end. But then again most reviewers pin point this about them and recommend amplifying the signal. Overall I think it's a very good headphone for a very reasonable price. Now if you can get them at a good deal grab and go, take them home like I did without regrets .

  • HiFi Covet

Rich and warm, full sound and detail without being overly stimulating. These are comfortable and make me want to close my eyes and listen to beautiful recordings of music I normally may have dismissed. Sound sweetest to me with a little gain (6-9db) and tiny amp enhance bass and highs.

  • Great Entry Level Planars

Sound Quality is great for its price point. Treble can be harsh at times, but bearable, at least for me. Bass is fairly good, not bass-head level by any means, but pretty good. Mids are fine, definitely not the forefront of the signature. Detail and clarity of the sound is very good, so long as you have a good source. These headphone will benefit from a good amp. Build quality... although the materials they used are nice, doesn't seem like it will last very long as some parts tend to fall out of place. This will not affect the sound, but just something to keep in mind. Otherwise a great product!

  • Great price and sound but smells

Amazing price and seller. I really appreciate these headphones the sound amazing and offer a huge symphony experience. The only issue is the smell like smoke. I will put them in a bag with dryer sheets and try and get it out but it’s hard to chill with such a strong cigarette smell. It’s okay though worth it!

  • Good at what they do

Good, warm headphones. Sturdy. Good build quality. Miss and highs drop off pretty hard, so don't get this if you love female vocals, higher pitched male vocals, and instrumental music.

  • Nothing short of amazing.

Just buy some. They’re making me wonder why I ever spent time using dynamic drivers. Great bass, without being muddy or too overwhelming, and while I was expecting piercing highs, these just sound so sorted in the high end too. Mids are pretty great as well with kick drums and such. Sound just as good on my THX AAA 789 as they do on just an iPhone, but they need more power than an iPhone at some point to really bring out more dynamics. Mine had a rattle in one of the cups when I got it which was fixed by retightening all the screws. YMMV because these are definitely a less QC product from China.

  • Great cans at a low price

Bought this as a gift for a friend who tried my HiFiMan 560s, and said he would like to get his own when he could afford them. Got a great price on these Massdrop cans on Ebay, and would rate them about 75% of the sound/comfort of my 560s at 1/3rd the price. Planar magnetic design is world's better than others.

  • Planar but definitely not Plain!

Great authority and weight, slightly the power-hog but any O2 type amp or JDS Labs Atom will drive them just fine. Overall they sound lively, open and mostly uncolored.

  • Best value for the money, use the rest for a good amp stack.

These are great headphones if you have a powerful amp like a Magni Heresy. I've had most of the Hifiman lineup and would much rather have these with a Schiit Magni Heresy Modi stack than the Sundara alone for the same money. They're fun and fast, great for techno or fast heavy metal songs. For gaming they're best with a Sound blaster AE-7 to bump out the sound stage which is shallow but wide.
