A NECESSARY EVIL.-
This is a good quality product but certainly wears out when used seriously for training. My last one worn out in three years so were the previous three other monitors I had. Good for running power and some running dynamics due to software version 6.3
This is an earlier generation HRM-Run heart rate monitor and has an accelerometer to give information about running dynamics (and works with compatible Garmin watches to give power information - through Connect IQ apps). However it ships with the earlier software version, 6.3 and does not seem to update (through the Garmin Forerunner 645) automatically to 6.6, which is necessary for having real time monitoring of the ground contact balance, stride length and vertical ratio. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the latest HRM-Run strap to provide you running power stats, this is great. Garmin HRM is awesome!
Up until purchasing the HRM, I was relying on the wrist-based HRM on my Garmin Fenix 5x. I knew it was way off - I would get very high readings when running relaxed and low readings when running hard. The chest strap HRM solves that problem. You get what you pay for
I've had several other heart rate straps over the years, and none of them produced a consistent reading for me. Not only does this consistently and accurately measure heart rate, but it offers a wealth of additional dynamics when used in conjunction with a compatible Garmin device. I like the added dynamics
I don't normally check my HR during workouts, only if something feels unusual. After a workout is when I see if my "feels like" matches the data. I believe that less vertical oscillation means less impact on my joints, so I've made a conscious effort to run with less bounce. I decided to go with a repackaged (assuming refurbished) HRM because they seem to last only about one year. I don't mean just batteries, it's the actual unit. To their credit, Garmin replaced two of them for me at no cost to me. I do rinse it every after every workout and wash it at least once a week. First hrm chest strap
I purchased this to pair with my Garmin Vivoactive hr & my just purchased Garmin Virb XE action camera. Once I was able to adjust it correctly, I am finding it relatively comfortable to wear. I have been using it primarily for jogging and TRX training. I haven't directly compared the data to my wrist hr monitor but it does seem to reflect the trends of my workout intensity accurately. I am able to see my intensity adjustments reflect my hr in real time. This way I have been successful in staying in my aerobic zone on average throughout the duration of my workouts.
