Great way to extend & strengthen existing Orbi network
I have an Orbi router + satellite in my 1920s house with plaster & lath walls, so signal propagation was not great - especially in my home office. Netgear charges a ridiculous amount for add-on satellites if you buy one new. I even thought about buying another router + satellite (which is often cheaper than an add-on satellite alone!) and toss the router, but that seemed too wasteful. So buying the satellite used seemed like a much better option.
At first it worked ok, but was kind of flaky. I had to play with it a while before I figured out how to connect to the satellite directly - when it was working with the router and I connected via my browser, it would spin for a long time and refused to accept my password. I finally did a factory reset, removed it from the router's config, and connected via ethernet. When it finally let me connect, the problem was clear: it was several revisions out of date on firmware, so my router didn't communicate correctly with it. I had to update it in 3 steps to make it work.
Now I've had it running for a week and it's great. The dead spot in my office is totally gone - I get close to 300 Mbps on internet speed tests. I haven't tested the wifi speed internal to my network, but qualitatively it's super fast.
