About this product

Product Information

When the inhabitants of a peaceful world are conquered by the bloodthirsty yumens, their existence is irrevocably altered. Forced into servitude, the Athsheans find themselves at the mercy of their brutal masters. Desperation causes the Athsheans, led by Selver, to retaliate against their captors, abandoning their strictures against violence. But in defending their lives, they have endangered the very foundations of their society. For every blow against the invaders is a blow to the humanity of the Athsheans. And once the killing starts, there is no turning back.

Most relevant reviews

  • Well written and well worth reading.

While the story of people or groups forced into violent confrontation against their will is hardly a new one this particular example is well told, with very credible characters, who are increasingly aware that their resistance is destroying the very thing they are trying to defend. It is a story of inherently peaceful people trying to hold on to their principles.

  • Excellent read

Arrived in excellent condition. This is another of Ursula Le Guin's intelligent, powerful books that addresses multiple issues still relevant today with a little dry humour in places. Brings you face to face with our human condition and the possibility of alternative ways.

A message for today to remind us of our need to protect our planet and cease the wanton destruction of precious peoples and their habitats
