Indispensable core rules for DMs
WotC have surpassed themselves with this guide. Almost all the classic monsters are included with some new ones as well. The art is excellent with a picture for almost every creature. 5e has a certain charm that fuses the modern game with old-school enthusiasm (but if you've read this far you probably already know that). If you want to play Dungeons and Dragons, you probably need this.
This is the book that describes all the monsters, you don't need this if you are a player, but you probably do if you are the Dungeon Master.
