Thule 591 rooftop bike carrier
I bought this set of 3 carriers with the Thule wingbars and fittings for my Audi A3. Fitting was quick and simple with help from the instruction leaflets included. During assembly the quality of manufacture and strength of materials are obvious. They give you confidence that the product will work safely, without scattering your precious bike all over the motorway at high speed! Once fitted, the bikes are easy to load and secure in position; so long as you have the strength to lift them easily over your head. There is no danger of them toppling onto the car roof unless you place them incorrectly, which is difficult (unless you stumble). There is virutally no wind noise when travelling with 3 bikes on top at 70mph, just a very soft whistling sound which is soon forgotten. Unloading is equally simple and quick. The whole system locks down securely to reduce risk of theft. However, I would not leave it fitted to the car permanently as you would be asking for trouble. It is very easy to dismantle and store in a garage or loft. The 591's are much cheaper than their newer upgrades, the 598's, but the improvements are minor/superficial. An excellent product!! Pricey when bought with bars and car fittings, but I feel I've got my moneys worth after just two weekend trips cycling with my family in the New Forest. Hopefully, many more years of this to come! Not all it's cracked up to be.
I was expecting a better product. Reading the reviews on this I thought it was going to be an amazing piece of kit. After fitting it to my roof and attaching my bike I was not comfortable with driving at any speed or cornering with my pride and joy on the roof. I was expecting better wheel supports and clamp that tightens round the frame could be so much better. The only benefit for me was that because it is popular someone bought it off me straight away. Thule 591 cycle carrier
Although this item has now been supersede by the Thule 598 cycle carrier, they are pretty much identical and if you can pick them up at a good price they will give you years of secure cycle transport! They come with T track connectors and clamps to attach to square bars so will fit almost any roof bar! A great product for transporting your bike on the roof of your car so you can still open your boot whilst in transit or whilst towing! They come with locks to secure the carrier to the roof bar and also to secure the cycle to the carrier, you can purchase wheel strap locks separately.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Thule roof bars
Easy to fit bike onto and 4 of the racks fit onto our car. (Took a bit of time to initially set up, we had new roof bars too) We previously had rack which attaches to tow bar but decided not to put a tow bar onto new car (largely due to cost) Looked around at different roof options and went for the Thule 591 as they are easy to put the bike onto once you have it at the roof. Because we have 4 to carry, had to turn fittings round to work from left and right side of car. Now that they are attached, very easy to put bikes on to. (Haven't taken bars and rack back off car yet.) Easy to drive with them on and much better for ease of access to the boot than our old rack. Quick to use but fiddly
The manual requires some scrutiny as it's quite confusing to build these items for use - especially when certain parts are only for specific roof bars but once it becomes clear it's quite simple albeit quite fiddly. I have the aerobars so a lot of the enclosed parts are surplus and the better designed T- pieces are used instead to slide into the bars and lock in place. Holding the bars up to slide the T-pieces can be challenging too if attempting alone but once located, the procedure to lock in place is swift and easy. To use the T-pieces requires cutting up the rubber insert to avoid wind noise by sealing the remaining gap areas and as these are £20 each to replace some people might prefer to use the additional parts and instead clamp them to the bars and not use the T-pieces but this forgoes the convenience of the T-piece feature which is a shame and defeats the purpose of the aerobar design. It would be nice if the aerobars came with several replacement rubbers and not charge the customer to cut them which the design requires. Fitting bikes to the carriers are a lot simpler and quicker than fitting the carriers themselves and despite a very slight wobble, results with the bikes fixed securely and inspires confidence. Locking of the main support arm and the carriers to the bars leaves you confident that your bike is safe but one concern is that the locking of the arm locks the clamp for the bike frame and not the arm itself. I have 2 carriers and to fit them requires one facing forwards and one rearward to allow access to the mechanisms. There's a forward and rearward facing carriers and, if no bikes are fitted, the rearward carrier faces oncoming wind and I am concerned it could cause the arm to flip over as it cannot be locked at the hinge only at the clamp as stated. In summary, a confidence-inspiring carrier that is simple to load and unload bikes but fiddly to build and install into bars solo. A few oversights such as the arm free to rotate when locked and having to cut up the expensive-to-replace rubber inserts but apart from that I'm happy with them considering the excellent price for 2. I understand this model has since been superseded with an updated model - maybe these issues have been addressed but that update comes at quite an expensive price compared to these.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Excellent carrier
The quality and design are great. The locking mechanism is strong and easy to use. My only question is if fitting two on the roof would it not make sense to produce one of the pair with the mechanism and locks on the opposite side for easier access from the other side of the car?
