1982-2023, A Musical Journey
A Certain Ratio have always ploughed their own furrow, so there is always an element of doubt as to which musical direction each new CD will take. 1982 has an appropriately retro influence with a modern electronic update. Remain in Light, the seminal Talking Heads album is an obvious inspiration for the single Afro Dizzy, Samo and Constant Curve. Ellen Beth Abdi adds soulful vocals to an insistent African rhythm. The title track 1982 combines Cabaret Voltaire and Kraftwerk with some panache. Tombo in M3 returns to Latin inspired territory. A Trip in Hulme is a classic slice of experimental electronica whereas Holy Smoke has a jazzier element. The closing track, Ballad of ACR, does what it says on the tin: it provides a nostalgia tinged overview of the band's career.
