Gene Barry and Ann Robinson star in the first movie adaptation of the classic HG Wells science fiction novel. Life in Southern California takes a sudden turn for the worse when a large 'meteorite' thuds into the ground. But the projectile is, in fact, the vanguard of an alien invasion from Mars. Naturally, the US government throws its military might against the interlopers, though with little effect. As the Martians spread across the country, trailing devastation in their wake, it starts to look as though only a miracle will stop them. While the increasingly desperate military place their confidence in the period's ultimate deterrent, Dr Clayton Forrester thinks he may have a more scientific solution to Earth's problem. The film won an Oscar for its special effects, which remain (largely) surprisingly convincing 60 years after its release.
