    A budget AC68u

Ok so in TM-AC1900 form, this is a decent router. Nothing special, but decent. The issue is that this won't get Asus' latest and greatest firmware updates, which would add a lot of features, the headliner feature being mesh networking. But all is not lost! If you are a bit tech savvy, and are able to follow instructions, there are plenty of how tos out there showing how to flash this router to transform it to an AC68u, which uses the same hardware, just with different firmware. At that point, and for the price, this becomes an outstanding router. You can setup a mesh network using multiple flashed ones of these for less than half of what it would cost if you were to buy a plug and play kit. The instructions I used are here uu uu uu . bayareatechpros . com/ac1900-to-ac68u/ . Note that if you are a linux user, then you likely have all the needed tools to conduct this procedure without installing additional software packages (scp, ssh). Note that if using a more recent linux distro, you will have to add the flag "-oKexAlgorithms=+diffie-hellman-group1-sha1" to both ssh and scp commands. Happy hacking!

    Didn't work out for me

Good: It works, albeit with T-Mobile firmware. And you can upgrade to the latest T-mobile firmware. If you want a T-Mobile compatible router you're in luck. Bad: I was unable to do an ASUS firmware upgrade, in other words, to return it to ASUS configurability, despite trying to do so on both a PC and a Mac and spending much time researching means to do so. Nothing worked. The firmware upgrades failed. Stuck with T-mobile configuration.

  • Great router if you flash it to Stock Asus firmware

Inexpensive fast router with lots of features. It's not perfect because if you want to use it you really should flash it to the standard Asus firmware. This unlocks some more features like AI mesh and more importantly gets it a lot more recent firmwares with more fixes for bugs and security issues. The flash process is not too bad but it's certainly not point and click simple. Unfortunately even the Asus firmwares seem to have reached EOL with them announcing they are stopping development all their AC routers. Probably only critical security updates going forward. Still a great deal if you are willing to jump through the hoops to flash it.

  • Feature Packed and Fast!

The 150MBs purchased download speed from COX measures 174Mbs actual speeds at the PC using this router and a Zoom 5370 Modem. Dual band with guest networks and features like 2 USB ports for file sharing / print sharing. Still working on getting the print share to work, but file sharing works well.

  • Best Wireless Router for Most People!

What sets ASUS wireless routers apart is high quality, outstanding firmware, and AiMesh. The more expensive RT-AC86U is faster and more capable, but the RT-AC68U is also excellent, and is all that most people need. Highly recommended!

  • Great Value Great Router

Nice router. Reflashed to Merlin firmware and it now thinks it is an RTAC68U with all the features working. Router was received in a plain box just as pictured. Everything present. Worked so well I have ordered another one.

  • Great router. Does all that was expected of it.

My primary reason for the router was port forwarding. I have an ATT u-verse gateway which does not handle it because of an old firmware bug. So, I decided to get a better router (Asus is arguably one of the best) and put my gateway into IP Passthrough mode. First impression was that the TC-AC1900 has a great GUI interface, very intuitive in the way it is designed. Handles port forwarding really well. As a bonus, it provides a free DDNS. Integrated PPTP VPN (not a secure protocol) server works fine but no luck with OpenVPN (secure protocol). Cannot connect, connection time out. Perhaps this is related to my ATT BGW210 gateway which is doing the IP passthrough but might be preventing secure opening of a tunnel (another bug?). Also, after spending on it many hours I could not get the router into rescue mode, so no Merlin for me :(.

  • Great range and great router!

Needed a new router to be able to get signals to reach my garage. This router accomplished that with ease while also keeping the speeds pretty fast. The setup was easy as well and pretty much was a plug and play type of install. Don't have any complaints with this router 2 weeks in and does the job perfectly!

  • Great router for the price

This is a great router. I have bought 4 of them from various places. They are pretty easy to convert into an Asus AC68U router. This allows for firmware and security updates as well as additional features that aren't included in the stock T-Mobile firmware. The mesh software in the Asus firmware allows multiple router to seamlessly connect together.

  • Added wireless range for a good price

A friend bought this router and told me it had better range than most. I had considered a range extender but did not like adding complexity to my network. This router at least doubled my range so that it now works in my detached shop and to my neighbors houses when I visit them. Have only used it a few days but am very satisfied. Only suggestion is that some type of setup instructions would have helped, but I was able to find instructions online.
