For Benjy, these included how to deal with his overbearing Jewish mother, and how to win the heart of the show's production assistant, K.C. Downing, who only saw in Benjy a manic goof-ball. For Swann, these included how to act responsibly, especially with regard to a twelve year old daughter, Tess, who he had not seen in years.

  • My Favourie Film

I had a copy of this on VHS and hadn't been able to watch it for a while. I thought I would get it again and am so glad I did because it is a perfect comedy film. It is set in 1954 in New York and beautifully re-creates the making of a TV comedy show. It is the period when the classic period of Hollywood was waning and TV was kicking in. The cast members are all marvelous. Peter O'Toole plays a fading Errol Flynn type movie star trying to come to terms with the new medium of TV, Joe Bologna is the TV star comic and Linn-Baker a young script-writer. They are all brilliant, but then so is everyone else. One of the 'extras' on the DVD is the 'directors commentary'. It was Richard Benjamin's first film as director and he explains how he cast the various roles and describes his relationship with the actors. O'Toole's skills as a comedy actor are given due credit. And all the minor parts were cast carefully so that all scenes were crammed full of brilliant performances. Apart from the main theme, the film is a celebration of New York and also of the Jewish community in Brooklyn. And it all looks so good. A great film and really funny.

  • Wonderful Romp

A very thinly disguised madcap romp based on Mel Brookes's early years working as a writer for Sid Caesar's TV programme, with Peter O'Toole playing a fading Errol Flynn. The on-air fight is worth the money alone.

  • O'Toole at his best

This is one of the funniest films I have ever seen. Peter O'Toole portrays a character that we would all love to be. Suave, sophisticated, famous, and a complete drunk who wins through in the end, Brilliant

Many decades ago I enjoyed the film in the cinema. It's never on television, and I wanted to see it again. Good decision.
