Trim the wick with a wick trimmer so that the end of the wick has a clean straight cut along its top edge. Light the lamp according to the manufacturer’s instructions. After lighting observe flame. A flame which is to high, will cause unnecessary smoking. To alleviate this, lower the wick.

burns silently away with no smell
I have used clear odourless lamp oil for many years. I have two small glass bowl/jar i refill and use a dye for effect. As long as I keep the wick trimmed and very low, both candles will burn for many hours when lit. I use a small steel funnel when refilling; and the bottle has a useful spout that helps this along. I have no larger vessels I could use, but am satisfied with the 2 current ones. I would happily recommend this oil for similar use. I have used this regularly to fuel a couple of antique oil lamps. I find one bottle adequate to fill one reservoir. I have had no problems filling as the bottle has a narrow spout and prevents spillage.
