This Airport Time Capsule Wi-Fi broadcast tool is crafted with an eye towards backward compatibility. To this end, the Capsule broadcasts wireless signals in both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz frequency bands. The Apple Airport 2.4GHz transmissions work with 802.11b, g, and n architectures. The Airport Utility Time Capsule's 5GHz band fully supports 802.11n and well as 802.11a clients. The wide-ranging backward coverage provided by the Airport gives you access to a larger pool of devices. Creating these broadcasts are six of Apple's proprietary beam forming receive/transmit antennas. Three of the Mac antennas serve the 2.4GHz radio, while the other three support the 5GHz band. This Airport Utility Wi-Fi station provides you with a specialized 802.11ac feature called beam forming. Beamforming antennas are capable of a combined link rate of transmission of 1.3 Gbps. Each individual stream can bring a rate of 433.3 Mbps to the table for you. This gives you plenty of browsing speed to complete tasks. This Wi-Fi router provides you with a specialized 802.11ac feature called beam forming. Beamforming antennas like the one used in the Mac can recognize the spatial location of devices on the network. They can then send out separate and concentrated beams to each individual device. By increasing the speed of conversations between the router and an individual client, the throughput of your overall network can greatly increase. The Airport beamforming capacity also makes your signals less vulnerable to distortion and interruption. This Mac router serves as a solid backup and storage device. The Apple Time Capsule is available in one of two hard drive sizes, including 2 Terabyte and 3 Terabyte. This hard drive capacity provides you with up to several thousand gigs of space. This amount of storage makes it easy for you to securely put away literal databases of information. To enhance this ability, the Time Capsule hard drive allows access to any authorized users on the LAN or WAN. Plus, users can attach USB external drives to the Time Capsule, which others can then access and share. This feature is a powerful way to share resources among colleagues, friends, or family members. The Mac airport Base Station also uses its storage capabilities to perform automatic wireless backups periodically. This feature works to make copies of your important files, media, apps, and more. It can download and save data from any Mac computer in your home or office. After initially setting parameters after unpacking the unit, you can let the Apple Airport NAS do the rest. The Time Capsule's base station community capabilities make it a great candidate for network device sharing. This ability is applied with the Mac router's wireless printing capacity. Whether you have a cable or not, you'll be able to connect the router to compatible wireless printers. Once that's done, every other computer on the net will be enabled to print through the Apple router. Apple has managed again to make something that is easy to setup and works beautifully. Clean and neat and can't be beat
OK, right now, the buzz is all about "Mesh" networks, or the ability to take a bunch of wifi routers and have them seamlessly chain together as a single wifi network of the same name so you don't lose your connection as you walk around your mansion or estate. I don't have that problem as I live in a studio apartment, but I do have a problem of approximately 400 units stacked on one acre of land in downtown San Diego, most units having their own wifi, while the building offers a highly utilized free wifi service as well. That scenario offers lots of collisions with your neighbors, which will slow down any wifi network, and after the latest and greatest version of Apple's firmware was automatically installed, this router became not only rock-solid, but faster than greased Lightning 3.0 cables! It is very stable, where the previous firmware made it easy to understand why so many people were parting with their recently purchased routers on eBay for whatever they could get for them. And, that is what I like about Apple products, in general. They tend to look great, out of the box, but in time, their performance get better. Not very many Apple-made products that I have resented purchasing. Even where I became aware of some other product having some feature that I might have liked, I always felt like I got more than my money's worth, and I would echo that sentiment here. My only wish for their next generation of routers, (and, please don't go out of the business or Routers, Apple), is that they sacrifice two bits of "elegance" and put a reset button, preferably, on the top, but at least on the back, not admitting that it is unreliable and will often need to be rebooted, but so in the rare instance it does, doing so will be user-friendly and not require a manual or yanking the power cord from a spinning hard drive. (OK, since you kind of started this "mesh" thing by making it easy, but not cheap to do the same thing, making a less expensive Mesh product would be nice, but for the millions of people like me that have a 0-2 bedroom pad, less that 2500 square feet and no metal walls, this is great!Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Small and compact, with great features
I was skeptical at first - but after running numerous "shield up" firewall vulnerability scans and testing various features I have determined that this is a well oiled network router w/ time machine backup capabilities. My network is secure, my mac computers can back up wireless, I can access my mac remotely and I have the fastest wireless and wired upload and download speeds that I have seen in a long time - I switched from a Dell SonicWALL TZ300 and unifi AP AC-Pro to this - and while the apple airport time capsule might not have all of the features of the TZ300; it certainly does its job very well.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Hard drive is shot and will need to be replaced. I didn't buy it for the Time Capsule capabilities and will replace the hard drive at a later time. Like a rock.
The AirPort Time Capsule has been a great addition to my hime network. Backs up my Mac EVERY hour and that has come in real handy retrieving 2-month-old discarded emails or previous document versions. The router works great with everything in the house including a remote access point router of another manufacturer. The capsule works great but it did take a call into Apple support to get things working. I had a router set up already and had to disconnect that one in order to use the capsule. It chooses very odd IP address numbers, so it was a challenge getting my network printer to work. After all that, the product works exactly as promised and I've had no problems with it at all. Great product but blew out our network
If you already have an existing wifi network, there will be some speed bumps. Took us awhile to get things back up to speed because it overrides the current wifi system and knocks other computers off.
