His shoveling takes him back to the surface - and into the lions' cage during a circus act. Just like that, a star - or at least a Joey - is born. A Joey is circus-speak for clown and who better to play that clown than Danny Kaye?.
Danny Kaye was known for his witty word play along with wacky and convoluted scenes. Merry Andrew is one of these films. While not as hilarious (in my opinion) as his most famous film (The Court Jester), this one still ranks near the top of all the films he did. The whole circus sequence gets wackily mixed up with the archaeological dig he's working on in hopes of finding a famous statue of Pan that, in so doing, will restore his father's faith in him. Of course, as usual, there is also the love interest and a whole host of zany events, not the least of which is his getting caught in a cave-in, digging through the roof of it, and coming up in the middle of the circus' lion act. And wait until you see the full-fledged dance routine (ala Busby Berkley) that happens in the circus' center ring! All in all, a fun musical comedy that all the family will enjoy.
