  • Comprehensive (almost) but not up-to-date

Having bought this 2018 edition of the Ukraine guide, I found it to be as comprehensive as all Lonely Planet guides in its descriptions of most Ukrainian regions and cities. However where it disappointed is in approach to the enents of 2014 and 2022. This fundamentally has changed not only the politics but also the social-economic circumstances of the country. There was absolutely no coverage of changed circumstances in those parts of Ukraine which were no longer under the control of the central government - i.e. Crimea and the Donbas. In fact the Donbas was ignored altogether, and the chapter on "Eastern Ukraine" was largely limited to Kharkiv and those parts of the East controlled by the Ukrainian government, with the cities and towns of the Donbas being ignored totally. I appreciate that these placed are now inaccessible for all but the hardiest travellers (let's face it, it is dangerous to travel there, but then that's true of most of Ukraine since 2022). Lonely Planet projected a 2025 edition (is this still intended?), and I would hope that any new edition must now face being totally re-written to describe what amounts to a re-borne nation.

Great guide and very useful. The prices are a bit out of date but it’s a good guide to the city. Would be worth updating.
