'THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER- Five devastating human stories and a dark and moving portrait of Victorian London - the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper. 'Powerful and shaming' Guardian THE MULTI AWARD-WINNING #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER ___ 'An angry and important work of historical detection, calling time on the misogyny that has fed the Ripper myth. Powerful and shaming.' GUARDIAN ___ Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. They came from Fleet Street, Knightsbridge, Wolverhampton, Sweden and Wales. They wrote ballads, ran coffee houses, lived on country estates, they breathed ink-dust from printing presses and escaped people-traffickers. What they had in common was the year of their murders- 1888. Their murderer was never identified, but the name created for him by the press has become far more famous than any of these five women. Now, in this devastating narrative of five lives, historian Hallie Rubenhold finally sets the record straight, and gives these women back their stories. ___ 'Devastatingly good. The Five will leave you in tears, of pity and of rage.' LUCY WORSLEY 'Fascinating, compelling, moving.' - BRIDGET COLLINS, author of THE BINDING ___ Awards for The Five include- - Winner of the BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE for Non-fiction - HAY FESTIVAL Book of the Year 2019 - Winner of the Goodreads Choice Awards for History PRAISE FOR THE FIVE 'Gripping' New York Times 'At last, the Ripper's victims get a voice... An eloquent, stirring challenge to reject the prevailing Ripper myth.' MAIL ON SUNDAY 'Devastatingly good. The Five will leave you in tears, of pity and of rage.' LUCY WORSLEY 'Dignity is finally returned to these unfortunate women.' PROFESSOR DAME SUE BLACK 'Haunting' SUNDAY TIMES 'What a brilliant and necessary book' JO BAKER, author of Longbourn 'Beautifully written and with the grip of a thriller, it will open your eyes and break your heart.' • Compelling historical account

An interesting read which brings to life the hardships faced by the poor in Victorian Britain and especially by women. The author has attempted to piece together the lives of the five official Ripper victims from documentation of the period and created a compelling account which includes an indictment of the distortions reported about the victims, a product of the prurient attitudes and double standards applied to women.

  • Jack the ripper book

This book had me hooked I read it over 2 nights. It was very sad reading about these women who all had good respectable lives who then turned to drink and couldn't cope with life . All in all this book is a must have even if the ripper murders dont interest you.

  • Riveting book

Having read an article on this book, I wanted to know more about these poor women that had survived, but it's never been shown on television and I didn't know any women had survived. What a book, riveting from start to finish. I bought it from the historical point and highly recommend.

  • Putting the record straight at last!

This book is amazing. It gives these unfortunate women a voice. I am so glad this book was written, these women were not all prostitutes and should not continually be labelled as such. The research that went into this book is staggering. Highly recommended.
