About this product

Product Information

Hailed in his lifetime as the poster king, E. McKnight Kauffer's designs for the London transport system, Alfred Hitchcock, and others are an enduring influence on contemporary advertising and graphic arts. E. McKnight Kauffer (American, 1890-1954) was a pioneering figure who transformed the field of graphic design between the wars. He drew upon the emerging visual languages of Cubism, Vorticism, and Surrealism to create a modern graphic style that shaped the development of commercial art. Through collaborations with his avant-garde peers in art, literature, and design, including the Bloomsbury Group, Marion Dorn, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, Aldous Huxley, and Man Ray, Kauffer expanded the scope and impact of his field. This groundbreaking publication is the first to address the full range of Kauffer's career, from sophisticated designs for major clients--including the London transport system, Random House, American Airlines, and Shell, as well as Allied propaganda posters during World War II--to book covers, rugs, costumes, and stage sets. An interdisciplinary group of authors offer critical perspectives on the cultural context of Kauffer's work, bringing new attention to the designer's depictions of race, gender, and global politics.

  • Visually delightful, but.....

There are great photos and reproductions of Kauffer's work in this collection of essays, but the editor's choice or approval of chapter topics does not fit "The Artist in Advertising" title, and suffers from too 'woke' and hindsight-wise a critical agenda. This is typified by the collaborations ignoring many of the artistic milestones that saw Kauffer succeed so magnificently in Britain for 25 years with unequalled commercial and graphic influence and impact. Chapters on how he modernised the classics, represented women, illustrated race, designed stage sets and costumes, or contributed to interior design just do not meet or address the expectations of the title:: 'the Artist in Advertising'. As a consequence this collection of essays, despite the glorious technicolour of the reprographics, can not displace or even rival a balanced and informative overview such as Mark Haworth's in offering readers a serious and broad evaluation Kauffer's life and work.

  • Wonderful book on a much underated artist who deserves to be better known

An incredible catalogue, beautifully designed with compelling texts from a variety of authors which has been published to accompany an exhibition now planned to open in 2021 at the Cooper-Hewitt in New York. Whilst some McK purists might not be happy with the cropping of some of the images and the details taken out of the posters and other works, the overall design and production is first rate and this is a splendid addition to the growing list of books on the artist who is still not as widely known as he should and totally deserves to be.
