About this product

Product Information

Take the next step up from HD to Ultra HD with the Sony FDR-AX100. This 4K camcorder records video at up to 100 megabytes per second, and its 1-inch, 14.2-megapixel 'Exmor' CMOS sensor offers the utmost visual fidelity. UHD gives you four times as many pixels to play with as full HD does, so you capture stunning details. The main unit weighs just less than 2 pounds, so it is light enough to go anywhere, and the 12x optical zoom is more than enough to capture the images you want, even from a distance.

  • Almost Too Amazing

I decided to get one of these after a friend shot some video with hers. It was so much clearer than my little Sony HD camcorder and she wasn't even using the 4K setting! I selected "not easy to use" because there are so many settings, but you can choose the defaults, which should be fine for most videos. The unit seems very well made. Here's the difficult part - editing and burning copies. I think that the 4K resolution is too data heavy for my old laptop. Using the Sony software, the picture and sound are so jittery that I can't split the video into sections. I have an external Blu-Ray burner that worked well with my old videos, but I haven't been able to burn new discs in 4K format. Luckily, the camcorder has a setting that records both in 4K and mp4 at the same time, so I'm going to try to edit the video in this lower resolution setting, but I got this camcorder to make videos in higher resolution. I'm either going to have to get a new laptop or record in regular HD until I figure this out. Might have to get a 4K TV too!

  • Wonderful Camera

I'm pretty new to making videos and this camera is not a point and shoot type. Although in auto mode it is simple to use and gets good results. The better your camera knowledge the better the picture gets. The picture quality is amazing. This camera is right on the threshold of a professional camera. Gimbal controls are not the best but OK. I would advise using this with a camera pole, tripod or pistol grip because it can get heavy if your using it a lot. I love this camera but like I said I'm a novice to videos my last video camera was a GoPro 4.

  • SONY HAS STEPPED BACK TO WHERE THEY NEED TO BE. SEE THE GREAT FDR-AX100

MY THIRD SONY CAM CODER FROM THE 8MM CASSETTE TAPE TO A 3D CAMCODER AND NOW THE FDR-AX100 4K. ALL THREE ARE IN GREAT OPERATING CONDITION, BUT THE 3D MODEL DID NOT HAVE A VIEWER OTHER THAN THE LED SCREEN WHICH IS USELESS IN DAYLIGHT OPERATION. WITHOUT FINDING A SONY WITH THE VIEWER I PURCHASED A PANASONIC DISC RECODER WHICH HAD ITS OWN LIMITATIONS I DIDN'T LIKE. THEN I FIND THE SONY AX100 WHICH HAS THE LED SCREEN AND VIEWER WHICH ALLOWS ME TO VIDEO OUTSIDE IN BRITE SUNLIGHT. THANK YOU SONY FOR PULLING YOUR HEAD OUT AND INSTALLING THE VIEWER BACK ON YOUR CAMCODERS.

  • Awesome camcorder! Great deal!!

I wanted to get a 4K camcorder and decided on the AX100. Didn't want to pay the new price and found this one - an open-box item from Best Buy. Saved almost $500. And it's just like a brand new one. Couldn't be more pleased. The video is remarkable. Hard to believe how clear everything is. This replaces a very small Canon camcorder I've had for years. That worked well in sunlight, but lots of video noise anywhere else. This one is a modern miracle.

  • The Sony FDR-AX100 is worth the price.

I down-loaded the FDR-AX100 operators manual from the Sony website, and learned how to use the camera while waiting for it to be delivered. I initially used the FDR-AX100 to photograph the exhibits that I visited within the various Smithsonian museums that are located in our federal District of Colombia, and in the surrounding area. The FDR-AX100 makes excellent photographs in extremely low light conditions, which was fortunate: as most of the worlds museums now prohibit the use of a high intensity flash, which is normally required for high quality indoor photography. I allowed the FDR-AX100 to operate in the fully automatic mode, because I wanted to discover what it was capable of doing under all lighting conditions, and I wanted to challenge the cameras auto-focus features. I was not disappointed: the resulting high definition video images were all exceptionally good. The camera stores HD video or still images on a Secure Data High Capacity memory card. The manual states that the FDR-AX100 had been verified to work with memory cards of up to 64 GB capacity. I used a 128 GB memory card, and I would expect that it would also work with 256 GB memory cards. I purchased five high-capacity batteries for use with this camera, but I never required more than one spare battery, during any 12 hour day of HD video recording. This cameras low power consumption provides high endurance. The left side fold-out touch-screen video display is adequately sized, and the on-screen function-menus are easy to navigate. The rear mounted pull-out view-finder display is a bit small, but it is useful when recording in very bright ambient light conditions. The HD video output from the mini HDMI jack shuts-off while the camera is recording, which is most unfortunate if you have a desire to use it as a feed to a larger external video monitor while recording, but I was forewarned of this problem before I purchased the camera. This camera provides numerous professional grade features, and almost every function can be manually adjusted to match the requirements of the subject being photographed, and the requirements of the photographer. I could probably find a slightly better video camera: but it would cost several thousand dollars more than this one.

  • Lightweight with great features

It provides excellent quality video. The only improvement I could see is if the level were built into the screen.I once saw this in the viewfinder on a different type of Sony camera. It would be very helpful when shooting with the tripod and even handheld.

  • Too much to learn

Not recommend for amateurs. You need to spend a lot of time to learn how to use it, really. It is worth the money to buy. User manual is not in details enough, 👎. No touch screen, joy stick control only. It is a portable professional camcorder. Complicated menu.

  • Fabulous first impression

The AX100 has exceeded my expectation right out of the box. I did a lot of research and found that people had very few qualms about this camcorder. The video looked good and the features are above and beyond this price point. While this camcorder is a prosumer vehicle and might not match up with more expensive larger models, it measures up well for its light weight and ease of use. I am a professional photographer, and while I have not been a videographer before, I found this camera to feel good in my hands and the features all made sense (with a little menu-diving). I went out this weekend and shot video exclusively with this camera at a local event and I was exceptionally pleased at the results in 4K even when scaled to 1080. The detail is stunning, saturated and sharp. I shot all the footage in auto and was amazed at the fast focus and accurate exposure. The dynamic range was pretty good and the shadows and highlights equalized out quite well even on a sunny day. I had no problems downloading the 4k footage and I found the editing process seamless on my 2013 iMac. I don't have much insight into the subtleties of film and the overall look is bright and clear but not exactly what they call "filmic." I will have to play with color grading in order to see what I can do with that. Overall, this is an excellent, fully featured camcorder that is easy to use straight out of the box.

  • Great camera

I am a writer/photographer/videographer for a small regional news agency. I cover everything from local government meetings to parades to interviews. This camera is a great all around workhorse. It also records continuously, rather than in 30 minute segments, which is great for editing. Picture quality is superb. I purchased the Sony XLR-K2M shotgun microphone; a bit pricey, but well worth it. Highly recommended.

  • Best affordable 4K camcorder

There's nothing else like this camera. It has a huge 1" chip, high-quality lens. You can go full manual and get professional quality content. I went from a $45K Red One to the $1700 Sony AX100 and could not be happier. It's too bad Sony hasn't followed up on this line of cameras.
