About this product

Product Information

As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption-even murder and genocide-generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, bestselling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie. He focuses on white lies-those lies we tell for the purpose of sparing people discomfort-for these are the lies that most often tempt us. And they tend to be the only lies that good people tell while imagining that they are being good in the process.

  • Compelling thoughts about being dishonest

Sam Harris is a significant philosopher. In this book he argues that if we all stopped lying society would be much better. He comes close to saying that all lying is unjustified, even the white lies we all tell to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. He acknowledges though that sometimes in extreme cases it would be ridiculous to tell the truth and gives this example: you are living in the Nazi period and have Anne Frank hidden away in your attic. There’s a knock at the door and a Gestapo officer asks if you have any Jews in the house. You don’t say, “Yeah, Anne Frank’s up in the attic … “

  • Short but great

This is a short book but enlightening. If everyone were as honest as Sam Harris suggests, the world would be a much better place.
