Valve V000937-00 Steam Controller - Black

About this product

Product Information

Steam players are no longer confined to their desktops thanks to the Valve Steam Controller, a wireless peripheral that relies on Bluetooth technology. Designed to work with Valve's own SteamOS operating system, the Steam Controller introduces a customized experience for every player and game. Even if one of the games in your library doesn't naturally support controllers, the Steam Controller by Valve offers numerous default configurations as well as the ability to download user-made configurations for convenient, personalized key bindings and controller setups. In addition to sporting an analog stick, the controller also includes twin trackpads that both offer haptic feedback, resulting in very precise movement tracking that's suitable for games that demand accuracy, such as Sniper Elite III and Gravi. The battery doors also double as additional buttons, complementing the dual trigger buttons on both shoulders.

    Steam controller

It's solid - easy to set up use, has a premium build and works well. I feel it was money well spent. But... There's always a but, isn't there? But I still prefer my Xbox360 controller for platform games and the like. Perhaps that's simply because I am already used to it. Perhaps it's because it's simply better. I tried the Steam Controller with an FPS game thinking it would impress me, because that's its claim to fame. It didn't impress. Sure, it was better than other controllers in this regard - the trackpads are better for aiming than thumb sticks - but it certainly wasn't as fast or accurate as a mouse. Maybe it just needs getting used to. Long story short - it's not as good as my xbox360 for some things and it's not as good as my keyboard and mouse for other things.

Neat controller / could be better

Loading the controller configs submitted by other steam users isn't the easiest thing to do, but it does work if you keep at it... I think this is more of a steam interface issue. Also, because it lacks the right hand joystick you have to use a pad for view direction input and it can be very difficult when your used to console gaming with two joysticks.

  • Works almost as well as advertised.

Of course, it does require all games to be run through Steam's Big-Picture mode. I wish that it had standalone software a la the Steelseries engine. In terms of performance it is, as you might expect, somewhere between a mouse and a controller. It's better than any controller, but it isn't magical enough to rival a mouse. If you want to experiment with an innovative input devise, or if you're just a casual gamer who wants to play on the couch, then the Steam controller is probable worth $35. But if you're a PC gamer who is going to have a mouse and keyboard in front of you anyway then the Steam controller will probably sit unused. I bought this to play Star Citizen, which requires six degrees of freedom. I had hoped to use the gyros for that, but I was disappointed to find that that aspect of the software is grossly underdeveloped. I have had some success playing SC with the triggers and trackpads, though. I've also enjoyed using it for 2D games, and the gyros make it GREAT for racing games, but you should expect to spend at least a few minutes setting it up and tweaking before playing any new game.

  • PC Gamer's Dream!!

It took me alfew days to learn all about the (Absolute Complete) customizations of this controller, but was mostly self explanatory and anything youcant figure out yourself, google has the answer. If your a PC gamer you need this. Especially helpful for me, as a pc chair for a few hours a day can kill my back and can't very well relax upright in a computer chair. The only downside I find is the range of the dongle, I didn't get the extender with this so it could be better, but its range is a measly 5 feet. Why bother with it being blu-tooth I feel. Needs batteries for wi-fi as well, rechargables are great. All and all a very high 4 for me. You can make a customization to play any. PC game. You neeeeed this!!!

  • Weird at first

Every controller I've ever used has been easy. Nobody had to teach me how to use it. The Steam Controller is not like that. I'm still trying to figure it out. But I'm taking the time to learn how to use it and it is WAY more powerful than any other controller. Every button/trigger/pad can be customized. Even the sensitivity of a press can be programmed for the triggers. It does have a HUGE learning curve, but it is well worth it.

  • Good product, sad (but understanding) that dongle is missing

I love the steam controller. It's one of the most reliable and comfortable controller's I have used on a PC. In addition, the customization options for control schemes are endless (though somewhat of a pain to use as they can only be done in Big Picture and often require more clicking than should be necessary). I just made the mistake of not realizing this one doesn't come without the dongle.

  • A learning curve but AWESOME controller for the flexibility

The Steam Controller is a GREAT controller if you understand it. The main thing to remember is that it relies on configuration profiles you download from the Steam store or that you create yourself. This is the key to getting comfortable with this controller. The basic profiles may work but the user customized ones may suit you best. After looking at a few videos on YouTube I realized how awesome and configurable it is. It just takes time to learn. Think of it as like a middle ground between a regular controller (Xbox or Playstation) and the Keyboard/Mouse combo. It is not simple to use initially but has great flexibility and support through Steam. Even games outside of Steam can leverage it if you import them to the Steam launcher. In all I would highly recommend this controller for any PC game if you find the limited buttons on regular controllers not sufficient for your playstyle. Just be sure to take the time with it and customize the profiles if they don't quite fit your needs.

  • It's either ahead of its time or way too complicated

I like this product a lot, honestly. It feels amazing in my hands and the haptic feedback is neat. I also like that I can use this as a simple remote for my computer. For gaming, though, it's a bit hit and miss. I'm having a hard time getting used to aiming and it simply doesn't replace a standard controller for genres without aiming. Still, I'm glad I bought it. I purchased it for $25 so it was an incredible value. I almost bought a new one during the Steam sale for $35 and that would have been a good value, too. At standard retail pricing, it's good but if you're looking for a game-pad only, just buy a game pad. And don't expect this to do anything for aiming unless you put in a lot of time adjusting the sensitivity options.

  • Valve game controller

I was looking for a controller to use with pc games. This controller give the ability to utilize the mouse functions as well as typical controls similar/identical to game system controllers. I noted that many people rejected this game controller over the X Box controller or its counterparts. While I have also used those types of controllers, and truth be known I was looking for something similar for use with my PC, I thought the concept of the Steam controller was worth looking into. Considering reviews favoring most other controllers over the Steam controller, pricing, warranty, etc... I took my chance with the Steam controller. I am happy to report that this is a great controller. It may take some getting used to if you are accustomed to using the generic design offered by X-Box, PlayStation, etc... But the ability to be able to thumb over the pad (similar to the touch pad on a laptop) to perform certain moves that typically require simultaneous button pressing on other units, was great. It was truly like having a mouse and regular controller, all in one. I admit it's been some time since I last played my PlayStation, so I wasn't all bias about button styles. It was easy to go online and download a configuration for the many games that I use it with. Many players offer their configurations too. Setting the unit up is fairly easy but can get complex, which is good as it allows you to be very specific to how the macros, sensitivity, effects, are set up. All in all, it's a great controller. Better than a keyboard/mouse, more efficient and customizable than a typical console controller.

  • Difficult to configure but worth the effort

The Steam controller is the only one I've ever liked. I didn't like it at first because it's a pain to learn how to configure. There are so many options. But now that I know how to set it up, I have zero interest in using any other controller. I especially like the gyro functionality. It makes playing shooter style games very natural. Is it as precise as a mouse? No. But it's far superior to regular thumb stick type controllers. My wrists just can't handle all that time with the mouse so I need a controller to cut back on the strain. If you just want a plug and play controller that you won't need to configure or tweak, this is not for you. If you like having a controller with an absurdly complex configuration utility and more options than you will likely ever use, this is definitely for you.
