tl:dr - if you're playing "older" Roland HiHats, buy the VH-14D Digital HiHats ASAP...you won't be disappointed!
My Roland TD-27KV is a few years old now and it's been an amazing electronic kit. I really didn't have much complaint about the VH-10 Hi Hat controller other than I got used to them being way less responsive than normal acoustic hi-hats. After reading the reviews on the new 14" digital hats I was intrigued; reviewers were using words like "responsive," "nuanced" and "incredible dynamics." The price tag seemed steep but man, all of the reviews were so enticing...so I took the plunge. All I can say is...wow. Just...wow.
The VH-14D HiHats are as realistic as any triggered electronic device can be. Size-wise, they are a two piece, 14" so you are getting the same size/playing surface as the average sized HiHats. The pedal "feel" on these is spot-on to regular hihats. Playing-wise, they feel sensitive, fluid and responsive. To be honest, I enjoy playing these digital hihats more than my 15" Zildjian K Sweets because at the touch of a dial I can adjust the sound settings and play them as smaller, larger, brighter, darker, etc. They are a blast to play!
