THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER A Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year 2020 A Daily Telegraph Book of the Year 2020 'The Putin book that we've been waiting for' Oliver Bullough, author of Moneyland 'Books about modern Russia abound ... Belton has surpassed them all. Her much-awaited book is the best and most important on modern Russia' The Times A chilling and revelatory expose of the KGB's renaissance, Putin's rise to power, and how Russian black cash is subverting the world. In Putin's People, former Moscow correspondent and investigative journalist Catherine Belton reveals the untold story of how Vladimir Putin and his entourage of KGB men seized power in Russia and built a new league of oligarchs. Through exclusive interviews with key inside players, Belton tells how Putin's people conducted their relentless seizure of private companies, took over the economy, siphoned billions, blurred the lines between organised crime and political powers, shut down opponents, and then used their riches and power to extend influence in the West. In a story that ranges from Moscow to London, Switzerland and Trump's America, Putin's People is a gripping and terrifying account of how hopes for the new Russia went astray, with stark consequences for its inhabitants and, increasingly, the world. 'A fearless, fascinating account ... Reads at times like a John le Carre novel ... A groundbreaking and meticulously researched anatomy of the Putin regime, Belton's book shines a light on the pernicious threats Russian money and influence now pose to the west' Guardian

  • Be Afraid....Be Very Afraid

This is a very good book about how Vladimir Putin and his associates took control of Russia's assets and enriched themselves beyond imagination. Any opposition was ruthlessly crushed and any criticism dealt with by any means. The author, Catherine Belton and her publishers, were pursued through the courts and faced legal intimidation and the threat of bankruptcy......so the allegations in the book are probably true. The British establishment does not come well out of this as it chased the Russian Rouble. A very good book indeed.

  • Putin's People by Catherine Belton (2020)

At the present time ,with all the mayhem happening as a result of Putin's actions, this is a prescient and timely reminder of the steps that led up to the conflict Putin is inflicting on Ukraine and indeed the rest of the democratic world. I hesitate to suggest 'like' as the correct word to describe the book but it certainly sets out clearly and, as far as I can see accurately, how things came to this pass I believe that steps were taken to try and prevent its publication and it was reading about this that prompted me to buy it. Not much that a mere reading of the background can do to ameliorate Putin's actions but the more ascertainable facts one is aware of the more one is equipped to counteract false news. Wish that I could do more.

  • The Cold Hard Reality

This book gives you the cold hard reality of how Putin - and his KGB old guard - rose to power in Russia and basically twisted the legal and political framework to their own ends (mainly mega-financial) with little regard for the niceties of democracy or for that matter the ideals of Communism. It's heavy going at times but by the fin sh you will despair of not just Putin but also the money focus of the West and its financiers who happily ignore evil for the benefit of their own gain. Even in my dotage I almost feel like crashing a new moral uprising to overthrow the corruption around us.

  • A fascinating and detailed account of modern Russian history

This book explains in detail the history of modern Russia, how the present power structures of government and industry were put in place, and how it affects the West. The extraordinary narrative is both compelling and hair-raising by turns as it shows how the entire wealth-producing assets of the country were taken over by the KGB and organised crime, and how elements of British society were infiltrated and suborned by stolen money. It is a fascinating story, but also a warning; western politicians should take note.

  • Unbelievable corruption.

It lifts the lid on the corrupt Russian hierarchy and how the UK government has been asleep at the wheel, by allowing the proceeds to find its way to the UK.
