Product Information
The 1876-CC 10C Seated Liberty Dime depicts a strong and classic image of Lady Liberty seated, protecting the American crest. Made from silver, these dimes were minted in Carson City, forming part of an exclusive group of American silver coins. The Carson City mint began operating in 1870, established there due to the city’s large silver mine, but minted coins for only 19 years, including the Seated Liberty 1876-CC dime. In 1893, the Carson City Mint was closed permanently, meaning that the only dimes to bear the mark CC were produced prior to the 20th century. That makes a dime from this era a valuable piece of United States history. Now you can acquire this remarkable coin that is more than a 140 years old. President Andrew Jackson, former frontier general and hero of the War of 1812, who viewed himself as the champion of ordinary people and democracy, led the country from adolescence to adulthood. Emerging from war and depression, one of Jackson’s appointees, mint director Robert Maskell Patterson, wanted a new design for the U.S. currency that would reflect the country’s imperial mood. From its earliest days, the mint’s goal was to create a method for creating a consistent currency that would deter counterfeiting and assure quality control. This goal was largely reached with the Seated Liberty coins. Patterson had long admired the seated figure of Britannia found on English coins, and he directed Chief Engraver William Kneass to sketch an image of the goddess Liberty using a similar motif to symbolize U.S. imperial goals tempered by democratic ideals. James B. Longacre designed both the obverse and reverse sides of the 1876 Seated Liberty Dime CC. The design depicts Liberty seated on a rock holding the Union Shield on the obverse. The shield bears a scroll with her name. The seated Liberty figure rests within clear, uncluttered fields. The reverse shows the words ONE DIME within a wreath, tied by a bow, encircling UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The wreath is made of wheat stalks and olive branches denoting peace and prosperity. The Seated Liberty dime consists of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. Note that this coin does not come with the famed arrows to denote a loss of silver. The coin measures 17.9 millimeters. The coin’s edge is reeded. The dime weighs 2.5 grams. The original mintage included just over eight million, although very few in exist today. Liberty’s head on the obverse side and the bow on the reverse are both noted for their weakness. Any coin that presents the bow and obverse head more clearly are rare and thus of great value. With nearly three dozen die marriages overall, the 1876-CC dime is a rich field for collectors interested in varieties. The most popular variety is the very obvious doubled-die obverse coin. This blurred and rusted die was paired with no fewer than three reverses. Also found for this issue is a less dramatic doubled-die reverse coin, as well as a misplaced date variety. Some hues present as more silver and some as more gold. This coin is not only valuable for its beauty and history but also a patriotic symbol with Lady Liberty on the obverse. That is why this 1876 Seated Liberty dime coin makes a fine addition to any numismatic collection, whether for display or private viewing.
