    It is the right size!

Another reviewer mentioned that this model church seems too small, it is based on a real church situated in Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight and is to scale. The real church is very small! If you are looking for a large and imposing church for your model railway then this might not be right but its modest size makes it suitable for most layouts. The kit is well detailed despite the age of the moulds and is easy to assemble.

  • Most critical review

    on the small side

easy to put together so far , have not painted yet but cannot see any problems there , one problem is that for a church its seems to be on the smaller size my figures just say fit through the door , its only my opinion but it looks more like n gauge than oo ? but i am sure dapol have done their home work . Looks like i will have to put it in the background . pictures show man with child in door way and a line side hut in front with skaledale house and station building either side .

  • An old model that could do with an update

This model has previously been in the Airfix range since at least the 1960s. Now produced by Dapol, and to their credit they do mention that the kit is still made using the old moulds. The one I made needed a fair amount of work to enable parts to align and be glued together. The main walls were all warped and had to be straightened out using the warm water technique advised by Dapol. The end result was a model that had gaps between joins which were dealt with by using model filler and the whole kit looked very much like HO scale. Time for a new model for a new age!

  • Nice kit other than warping.

On first look, the problem I see is some warpage on walls. I read where another rater used some hot water to put them back straight, and I'll try that. Otherwise, it looks to be a nice "foreign" church. Mine is going to be a small monastery.

  • Great value.

A kit made with old tooling, however, it's standing the test of time. With a bit of filing , filling and straightening it comes good. Looks great painted and weathered. Well worth the money.

  • Not bad

I understand that Bigden58 has consigned his kit to the bin in frustration. I’ve long considered these kits to be HO scale 3.5mm to the foot. I bought mine to use as templates to enable me to construct this village church out of thick mounting card and stone papers. Thus, I can increase the dimensions to accommodate the discrepancy in size.

  • Hard to get, but satisfying model building.

This is a building kit that you can make up as it is, but it also lends itself to customization as a specific church. The detail is reasonably good quality, and can be decorated and super-detailed easily.

  • Poor build quality

Over the last 60 years I have built many kits , but this one has defeated me, after some hours I consigned it to the bin.

  • Good for 60 year old tooling

Good for the money, small imperfections, nothing that can’t be put right

  • Dapol church kit

Although a old Airfix mould this kit builds into a nice little church, not everyone has space for a cathedral on their layout. The quality may be lacking but you get good value for your money and the model is open to kitbashing to provide something different.
