In Thomas & Friends Railway Adventures, players drive a 3D simulation of Thomas the Tank Engine by operating controls on a playset attached to a computer keyboard. The controls consist of a throttle for forward and reverse action, a lever for track selection, a whistle for sound effect (and other uses), and a button on Thomas' face that makes him talk.<br><br>Players can drive Thomas to various locations on the fictional Island of Sodor and into one of four adventure-type levels. Play begins at the engine shed with tracks leading to each level where tasks such as delivering passengers and repairing landslide damage need completing. Some tasks can be completed within the level, while others require leaving and revisiting with items acquired along the way. Players will find four familiar stations throughout play such as Brendam and Cauldefell, as well as destinations like The Sodor Airfield and Bay.<br><br>While traveling between stations and destinations, Thomas passes signs that allow players, with a pull of the whistle, to view short video clips from different Thomas the Tank Engine stories. Upon completion of each level, four mini-games become available and there is an option to visit Sir Topham Hatt to create and print certificates of completion. The four mini-games, Troublesome Trucks Roundup, The Great Race, Mail Bag Snag, and Track Down Toby, present a maze of tracks for Thomas to work through. Interactive characters include Annie, Clarabelle, Cranky the Crane, James, and Percy.
