Bette Davis was at the top of her game when she starred in this soap opera-like drama by director Edmund Goulding. (Goulding had already proven himself a good director for Davis with THE OLD MAID and DARK VICTORY, though legend has it they fought like crazy during filming). As Maggie Patterson, Davis is a spritely southern belle in charge of a fertile plantation, and in love with a boozy, irresponsible pilot, Peter Van Allen (George Brent). However, she's competing for his hand with a glitzy New York rival, Sandra Kovac (Mary Astor). Maggie eventually wins Peter as a husband, but Sandra winds up pregnant with his child. When his plane goes down over the Amazon and he's presumed dead, the two decide to make a deal where Sandra has the baby in secret and Maggie pretends the child is her own. Of course all bets are off when Peter suddenly shows up. The result is a classy, cocktail and conversation melodrama, made sublime by the wonderfully bitchy dueling between Davis and Astor.

The great Lie.....
What more can I say about Bette Davis, every movie she plays in turns to Gold....And this is no exception one of my favorites...Bette at her best. Love her acting and this story plus sterling cast and how is was directed.....Mary Astor, George Brent and our beloved Hattie McDaniel. I was looking for this film and thank goodness for ebay you never let me down...

I had seen this movie quite a long time ago. Always loved it. Bette Davis and George Brent were wonderful actors and just excellent in this movie. A little humor and drama go a long way in this film. Great acting and a must for your collection.

Betty Davis and Mary Astor.," Two great actresses together"
I read in a review about this movie once; that this movie started out as a sorry strip. other wise would be a sorry movie but it was given to these two actresses because the studio knew they would make it work, and they did I think it is a wonderful picture, one that I have watch over and over again. Betty Davis as Maggie and Mary Astor Sandra really go at each other through out the picture. A really great movie two thumbs up for this one.
