About this product

Product Information

A provocative, surprising and richly enjoyable exploration of the British Empire, from a bestselling Wolfson Prize-winning author The enormous influence of the British Empire cannot be escaped. It has shaped the world in countless ways- repopulating continents, carving out modern nations, imposing its own language, technology and values. For perhaps two centuries its existence, expansion and final collapse were the single largest determinant of historical events. Now that it has gone, it seems to us baffling that such a strange entity should ever have existed. What was the dynamic that led to English-speakers standing on the shores of the Pacific, controlling the world's sea transport and creating a financial system that revolutionized the world's economies? John Darwin's provocative and richly enjoyable new book is an attempt to make us see anew how diverse, strange and in many ways chaotic the British Empire really was, controlled by a range of interests often at loggerheads with each other and as much driven on by others' weaknesses as by its own strength.

  • A broad-ranging and fair-minded assessment of British Imperialism

This is a very good book. It is clearly set out and deals with ten themes including how colonies started, settler-native interactions, trade, war, and rebellion. Every chapter is an excellent introduction to that branch of history and there are plenty of academic references. The book is generally well-written with a balance between anecdote and data. There are few readers who will fail to gain significant knowledge from this book. The book attempts to be scrupulously fair and avoid the bias that others have seen in offerings by Ferguson on one side and Tharoor on the other. I did not agree with everything in this book and some valuable sources seem to be omitted and others accepted uncritically, but in a book with such a wide scope, these mild failings are to be expected. The book loses a star because it is written in a very small font-necessitated by the Penguin paperback format. Possibly because of this, there is also a shortage of charts and graphs- often I would like to see them set out clearly rather than having to trawl through text. The author is an acknowledged expert on the break-up of the British Empire and this section is strong. This book was excellent value for money and wellworth the time spent in reading it.
