  • plb life insurance

Cant review what i have not used and I hope i never have to use this. Great value for money as my life is priceless. I would not go out on the water alone without a plb. Even a VHF marien radio is good but not the best way to call for help. A plb is.

  • Unproven review

This could be a handy bit of kit to have available. I hope I never have need to find out!

  • Emergency use only

A plb should only be used in an emergency. I hope I never have to use it. It follows that I do not know if my Fast Find 220 works at all. It is in a category that does not fit neatly into this type of review.

  • Ray Mears reccommended it, so I guess its pretty good!

Ray Mears showed off one of these devices together with an InReach Explore satellite transceiver. I did try to purchase the InReach first but the UK dealer refused to sell me the essential subscription for the unit, and the US makers said you could not purchase the subscription from them until after you had bought and recieved the machine! So I gave up and went for the Fastfinder. The two options are so different that it's hard to make a sensible comparison so I'll stick to the Fast Finder. Ray did warn that the unit was vulnerable to damage and I would agree with him. The float case does not protect the top section that could be damaged by impact, so I replaced the case with an old Garmin Etrac case that I had. Registration can take months, I have been warned by the UK registration authority, but they did say that it will still work without registration. I was disappointed to see that the box had been opened before I got the unit, so I do not know whether any of the very limited test cycles have already been used (the unit only allows 10 tests during its six year life) Of course, the only real way of finding whether this unit is really good is to try to get rescued! Which you are not allowed to do unless for real, naturally.
