RS-30 Charger is faster than normal 220V connections
I installed an AeroVironment RS-30 in my garage and I am happy with the results. I already had a 220V outlet at home I was plugging my Nissan Leaf into for faster charging than the 110V charging, but the RS-30 is at least twice as fast as I was charging before. I am getting twice the voltage as a standard outlet (220V vs 110V) but I am also getting twice the current flow on two pins (30A x 2 vs 15A) for effectively, 6 times faster charging than a standard 110 outlet. Since I installed the RS-30, the Nissan Leaf (30 kW hr battery) charges in a little over 3 hrs from nearly depleted. The RS-30 works well with the Nissan Leaf charging timer allowing me to plug in the car when I get home, but not starting the charge until 11:00 pm when the utility charges less per kW hr of electricity usage. The installation was easy. I just needed to find a wall stud near my installation location and two lag screws hold the unit in place on the wall. My unit had a 4-pin plug, so I purchased the outlet, conduit, wires, and circuit breaker and installed it myself. I recommend that you have a licensed electrician install the breaker, wires, and outlet for you to ensure safety, code compliance, and peace of mind.
