SynopsisShawls are currently making a huge comeback in the fashion world, but many people do not realize that the shawl has been worn for many centuries and in many cultures. This collection of patterns and traditions features shawls from around the world. From the Himalayas to Spain, from Iceland to Japan, and from Mexico to Norway, many of the shawls featured here have been taken from examples of historic knitted shawls. Other designs have been translated into knitwear from patterns for woven or lace shawls. Included are 25 patterns as well as historical and cultural information about shawls that have been used for prayer and mourning, as bridal veils, and as christening garments. Each design is presented with a full-page color photo, written instructions, and charts.

  • Beautiful lace, challenging knitting

If you have room for only 1 book of knitting shawls, it should be this one. Of course we all know there’s no way we’d only have one book but this really is an extraordinary book. Years ago I made the Irish Diamond Shawl when the pattern appeared in a magazine. I lost the pattern because it was separated from the magazine and became totally dog eared. When I saw this book I knew I had to have it. There are a number of great shawls to make but the Irish Diamond remains my favorite.

  • Probably my most favourite shawl book, ever

I had a copy of this book when it first came out and somewhere between multiple moves, I no longer had it. I was thrilled to find a copy! The very first lace shawl I knit was the Irish Diamonds shawl. I love this book for how clear the instructions are and the charts are a good size to knit from. I didn't need to make photocopies and enlarge them as I've had to do with other books. This is an excellent book for shawl knitters, whether they knit lace or not; several of the patterns don't involve lace, which is a nice change from many books.

  • From 'Grandmas Hands'

So many beautiful Shawl Patterns from around the world don't know which one I'll start first. The book gives a lot of tips about choosing the right yarn and needles for a project and how to gauge your work if you want to make an item larger or small.

  • Cheryl Oberle does it again

Love Ms. Oberle’ collection of Folk Vests. I think I’m on number 5 right now. So I looked up some of the photos for this and am very happy; it will prove a good idea book too, I think.

  • Title's accurate as shawls are organized geographically and historically.

Beautiful photos, and clear instructions for each of the shawls and wraps. Helpful when looking for a particular style--ie Faroese.
